Timeless and tough: Davey is a character girls can still relate to
By Icejar
I first read this as a teenager in the 80's and nearly wore out my copy. I read this again recently because the story had stayed with me through the years. The main character, Davey, was like an old friend. I wanted to read it again to see why I connected so strongly with her, and to see if the book was really as great as I remembered.

Judy Blume's husband calls this her best book, and I have to agree. It's a raw, honest, and beautiful look at a young girl finding her way through grief while observing the ways her family members deal with their own grief. The characters are well-developed, the emotions are real and believable. All the characters are fighting battles of their own, and we get to witness how they cope and how they help others through.

Much of the novel is set in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Davey finds a canyon where she goes to escape her well-meaning aunt and uncle and work through her struggles on her own. In the canyon she finds solace and Wolf, a boy who helps her navigate the canyon, and her grief, safely. It's hard to read this without falling in love with Wolf, as I did the first time I read this as a young girl. The scenes in the canyon with Wolf are powerful in their simplicity. He becomes her confidant, friend, and object of fantasy. Davey is courageous, but reckless. Wolf helps her learn that she can still be bold but that her risks require calculation and preparation.

During her time in New Mexico, Davey rebels against the ultra-safe life her aunt and uncle want to give her. She finds the courage to continue her life after her father's death and to become her own woman, finding her strengths and talents along the way. Davey is tough and outspoken in a way that is more the norm now, but was somewhat uncommon when the book was written. For that reason, I feel girls today would have no problem relating to her.

All in all, I realized I still love this book just as much as a middle-aged woman as I did when I was Davey's age. She reminds of myself in many ways, or of the daughter I never had but wish I did. She is truly one of my favorite characters of all the books I have read.
