Monsters & Madonnas, by William Mortensen

William Mortensen (1897 - 1965) was one of the most well-known and respected photographers in America in the 1930's. He worked primarily in Southern California as a Hollywood and studio portraitist and later taught his methods and ideas to younger generations. Mortensen's obscurity today is mainly due to his championing of Pictorialism, a force within photography that promoted retouching, hand-worked negatives, chemical washes, and an artistic, painterly approach that soon faded with the advance of modernism. He was considered an anachronism, an outsider in a field that rejected theatrical set-ups, retouching and imaginative subject matter. "Monsters & Madonnas," originally published in 1936, was a distilled manifesto of his thoughts and a response to the dominance of straight photography. This 1967 edition includes color plates which did not appear in the original publication.

The Warrior Ethos, by Steven Pressfield

WARS CHANGE, WARRIORS DON'T We are all warriors. Each of us struggles every day to define and defend our sense of purpose and integrity, to justify our existence on the planet and to understand, if only within our own hearts, who we are and what we believe in. Do we fight by a code? If so, what is it? What is the Warrior Ethos? Where did it come from? What form does it take today? How do we (and how can we) use it and be true to it in our internal and external lives? The Warrior Ethos is intended not only for men and women in uniform, but artists, entrepreneurs and other warriors in other walks of life. The book examines the evolution of the warrior code of honor and "mental toughness." It goes back to the ancient Spartans and Athenians, to Caesar's Romans, Alexander's Macedonians and the Persians of Cyrus the Great (not excluding the Garden of Eden and the primitive hunting band). Sources include Herodotus, Thucydides, Plutarch, Xenophon, Vegetius, Arrian and Curtius--and on down to Gen. George Patton, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and Israeli Minister of Defense, Moshe Dayan.

Review of KINDLE edition -- stick to paper
By Krykie
The content of this book is great -- but recommend you get it hardcopy, and not on kindle. Read other reviews for content.

It is not formatted well for kindle. Extra spaces after apostrophes, paragraph breaks not formatted....something weird. Try to change the font? The font selections are in Asian characters....can't change the font. When the book was downloading, the image had the Japanese notations. You can change the font size, but not the style, and the style is odd. This was a sloppy and careless "make it digital" attempt.

So, this book should NOT be purchased via kindle. I like the content, but the display is so annoying that it is distracting. For free, I'd take it. But not for the full price I paid.

By João D.
Interesting book with an outlook on the warrior ethos that I appreciated. However, the book is too short, and thus the author doesn't develop his subject in much depth at all. Also, most of his examples are taken from spartan society and from sources that are likely very well known for one interested in classical antiquity (he unearths no little-known pearls of martial wisdom from ancient sources, and one is taken to believe he just worked with the research he had already made for his Sparta-themed fiction). So it is an interesting and well-written piece, but a bit shallow.
Worth a read if you are into the subject of the military mind, but seems to me to be hanging in the line between being a historical book and a motivational one.

This knowledge should be required reading in all junior high schools
By Theresa
I am so deeply impressed by Steven Pressfield's writing. I have purchased several of his books after reading Gates of Fire, which was recommended to me by someone I love, who is a former Special Forces soldier. I am a female, and I can attest this book is not just for men.

I was in the military for almost 14 years and I wish I had known about Mr. Pressfield and his books much sooner. This knowledge is something that needs to be given to every woman and man as they come of age.

Our country needs more authors and thoughtful individuals like Mr. Pressfield.

Read it, read it now, and then read it once per month to continue your philosophical training in the Warrior Ethos.

great guide to visceral techniques, osteopathic medicine and osteopathy for pregnant women
By osteo reader
Got this book to help me manage problems other than standard musculo-skeletal pain and biomechanical dysfunction. Gives insight into evidence behind physiologic concepts and how osteopaths link manipulations and techniques to various types of problems. Well written and without confusing 'osteo-speak' to hinder reading. Good illustrations - at last something that gives pictures that actually help! The obstetrics chapter was a good overview, shame it couldn't be longer. The case history sections gave lots more info into the osteopathic approaches and treatment rationales than the preceding chapters, which reviewed the anatomy and techniques in more detail. Contains lots of useful approaches to many visceral conditions such as respiratory problems and various gut problems that are not often discussed in osteopathic texts, and can be applied to adults and children / infants alike. A great buy - definitely worth it. Sure to be useful to all osteos working in these areas, and other professions who want to know what osteopaths do.

Osteopath
By WhiteKiwiRunning
A very mis-leading title and cover. Obstetrics was left until the last chapter and was very thin on the ground. I brought this book to help me with further information about pregnant women and infants. It was of very limited help. This is a book on Visceral Osteopathy, not Obstetrics or infants. Although well written, I feel ripped off as it very clearly states visceral and obstetrics, but is 95% visceral. If you are looking for a visceral book this is great, if you want information about pregnancy and infants i suggest looking at other books.

Visceral osteopathy
By JamieTaylor
I was fortunate enough to have Caroline Stone as a tutor during my undergraduate days. She has continued to enlighten the osteopathic profession to visceral manipulation. This textbook will go down as a undergraduate and postgraduate essential. Beautifully illustrated and well written a credit to our profession.

The Rise And Fall Of The British Empire: Mercantilism, Diplomacy And The Colonies, by Phillip J. Smith

From the earliest settlements in the Americas, the British Empire grew to encompass nearly 25 percent of the earth’s landmass. Created from a diverse array of companies, colonies and dominions, these nations helped the United Kingdom to develop into the world's leading power by the end of the 1800s. Driven by a desire to expand economically and commercially, Britain was driven by mercantilism. Over time, the connections between Britain and its empire grew increasingly close. By the time of the First World War, the colonies were a main source of soldiers, supplies and support for Britain. Following the Second World War, the United Kingdom began a gradual policy of de-colonization. As colonies became independent, self-governing nations, they were offered to join the British Commonwealth. Encompassing a total of 53 nations, the modern Commonwealth is a throwback to Britain's colonial past. In his book entitled The Rise and Fall of The British Empire: Mercantilism, Diplomacy and the Colonies author Phillip J. Smith chronicles the ascent and descent of this once great empire.

The author should be paying you to proofread his book
By KPJ
"In his book entitled ____ author ______ ..." This familiar pattern, with its familiar missing comma, is used to introduce each and every one of the books published by Make Profits Easy LLC in every single one of their blurbs. This book is quite possibly the worst book I have bought in years. I think many of the other reviewers may be astroturfing.

Awkward language, misused words, amateur writing style, awful font, nonstandard punctuation, and no paragraph justification leave me little faith that the author gave proper treatment to his epic topic. The chapter on World War I is 9 paragraphs long. Not pages. Paragraphs. But the font is so huge and there's so much white space, he managed to get a few pages out of it.

I have no faith in the content of this book, and indeed I fear I may have become stupider reading it.

Who is the author of this terrible tome? Beats me. They don't bother to describe Phillip J. Smith's qualifications. Nothing in the book is footnoted nor sourced. Oh, it does have 5-book bibliography, although it doesn't specify what information came from which. I really doubt that Smith added any original value at all through his telling, as he's obviously not a professional historian, so you might as well get his supposed source books instead. They are:

Abernathy, David. The Dynamics of Global Dominance, European Overseas Empires 1415-1980 (Yale University Press)
Ferguson, Niall. The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power (Basic Books)
James, Lawrence. The Rise and Fall of the British Empire (St. Martin's Press)
Kennedy, Paul. The Rise and Fall of the Great Power (Harper Collins)
Porter, Bernard. The Lion's Share: A Short History of British Imperialism 1850-2004 (Edinburgh Gate)

Note how Smith shameless steals the title of source #3. Classy.

The worst piece of writing I have ever encountered. For more details about this miserable excuse for a scholarly piece of work see the other reviwers who judgedthis to be worthy of one or zero stars. I gave up after 4 chapters and then, on reading other reviwers discovered that information I was not alone in my displeasure. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR YOUR VALUABLE TIME.

Unbelieveable
By MiddleAmerican
The writer disappoints on every level. A dry recitation of facts. No context, no color, and no characters developed. Boring enough to make you sleep through a train wreck. It's not as bad as it could be, the book is short enough that any damage incurred from reading it is likely to be temporary. The book is published by --- Make Profits Easy LLC. Wow. 210 pages with big font size, double spaced, triple space between paragraphs, big indents at paragraphs and about 22 lines per page. No right justify of text along with no hyphenation combine to create even more white space. My copy of text has a two letter white strip down the length of the odd number page from page 5 through page 115. The quality of the printing matched the writing.
The only redeeming feature I can discern is that it is a very quick read (not many words to read).
I realize I may not be entirely correct in my assessment of this piece of work, it could be even worse than I have indicated.

Troika: A Communicative Approach to Russian Language, Life, and Culture (Russian Edition), by Marita Nummikoski

This communicative "natural approach" to introductory Russian emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Everyday topics are presented to allow readers to begin communicating immediately. Grammar is presented as a necessary tool for communication and is introduced throughout. The book aims at comparing and contrasting cultures, rather than presenting the target culture only.

Great Concept for class learning. Bewildering Execution
By Badger
I'm using this book in a Russian Class at a university, and I'm doing well so far. Therefore, there are obviously a lot of really
good things about the book. The progression of material chapter by chapter is excellent:: it gets you conversing, reading, listening, and writing in Russian right away, and feeds you grammar
mostly in manageable bites. EG: you learn masculine and feminine adjectives first, and only then learn the neuter gender. Meanwhile, each chapter introduces multiple communication
skills: e.g. you learn to introduce your family, describe your language skills, and so forth. There are no lengthy pointless dialogues to memorize. The book introduces some vocabulary
and concepts preliminarily, so that they don't seem so foreign when the book presents them in earnest. I'm enjoying the sophisticated cultural material as well. The workbook has extensive
exercises which substitute experience in using words for rote memorization to a large degree.

This book is designed for class use. I don't think it will be helpful for self-study unless you already know Russian. (see the deficiencies of the book, below).

This is in complete contrast to a traditional grammar book of the type that was in use, say 60-100 years ago. That kind of book throws a lot
more at you, albeit in a more organized form. Each chapter would present a new grammatical concept. (Gender, a chapter per case, etc), which a bunch of
exemplary sentences that might or might not come up in real conversation, like "My aunt's pen is on the table:, or "the bridge is over there." While that method produced
a good reference manual, it wasn't much use in getting you to speak or communicate effectively. In the 60's I took french with a purely verbal ALM method, which required the student
to memorize long dialogues and
almost dispensed with grammar altogether--not a good idea!. Educators have been struggling to find a balance between the two ever since. Now the emphasis is the
"communication method", which minimizes memorization and emphasizes skills you can use right away.

Just before I used Troika, I took a class with the Spanish text "Como se Dice", which like Troika, uses the modern communication method for teaching language, but with
with far more clear and consistent organization. Each chapter proceeds in the same order, which allows the publisher to provide a really helpful table of contents, which makes studying
for tests a breeze. For example, verb conjugations are always in the same format, location in the chapter, and color.

Comments that Russian is never going to be easy miss the point, in my opinion.
Russian is hard enough without making students jump through unnecessary hoops. If you focus on Troika's deficiencies (which I do in low moments) it seems like torture by
comparison.

Several problems make this book much worse than it could be. Some careful editing could really improve the course materials.

1) It appears to be designed as an immersion course: that is, spoken models and short dialogues appear first, almost exclusively in Russian
, with grammar to follow (and THEN the vocabulary list). So you see a bunch of words and sentences (only a few of
which are translated) used mysteriously. ( There's no indication in the immersion section whether nouns that end in the soft sign are masculine or feminine: no m or f, and no
modifying adjectives.) So you end up flipping back and forth between the examples in the immersion section, two sets of exercises (one set in the
immersion section and one set in the grammar section), the grammar explanations, AND the vocabulary at the end of the chapter. Nothing is constant: sometimes verb conjugations appear in boxes,
sometimes in boldface without boxes, sometimes on a blue background; sometimes both plural forms and singular forms appear, sometimes not. Studying for a test
is a nightmare.

(I have to question the usefulness of pure
immersion in an analytical language like Russian, where words change endings according to their function in a sentence. Chinese and English, which are synthetic, rely
more on word order and might be better candidates for immersion).

But putting that aside, splitting the grammar exercises from the immersion exercises is confusing, especially
since the split is inconsistent chapter to chapter.

Suggestion: put the vocabulary at the beginning, and merge the immersion and grammar sections.

2) The oral and listening exercises are the worst I've ever encountered, and I've taken French, Spanish and German. There are too few of them, for one thing, especially
at the beginning of the text. . Even
worse, you are given a sentence or phrase and you are expected to respond. Instead of providing the correct response after you speak, the exercises move onto the next
sentance. You have no way of knowing whether your answer (or pronunciation) was right. Without positive OR negative feedback the exercises are very frustrating. Moreover,
you can't tell whether or not a particular oral exercise appears in the workbook, since some do and some don't. . For a number of chapters, the oral material starts with the vocabulary for the chapter. But
inexplicably, in Chapter 9, the excercises skip over the vocabulary completely. It would be really easy to fix the latter deficiencies, and it would improve the
course materials hugely.

3) AND there's a separate written exercise manual, which I very much like (see above), but IT INTRODUCES MATERIAL NOT TO BE FOUND IN THE TEXTBOOK, such as
basic concepts like Cardinal NUMBERS (one, two, three, etc.)

4) All of this together creates a huge confusion about what exercises you do in what order, and sends you running back and forth between the various sections of the
book, the various sections of the workbook, and the web exercises. The book conjugates some verbs in the "immersion" section, others in the grammar section, and shows
an INCOMPLETE conjugation in the vocabulary section, with no explanation of how to go from the complete conjugation to the full one. (OK, now that I'm further
along in the course, I see that that's the standard dictionary approach... but why drive the student crazy in the early chapters? Why not explain?) Sometimes the conjugations
appear in the middle of text, sometimes in blue boxes, sometimes on a background color.....

My professors have posted daily assignments on the web, which helps, but I don't see why it should be necessary. Even so, you may , like me, end up skipping
important material without knowing it.

5) Finding anything in the course materials for review can drive you nuts, since it's not a comprehensive presentation. (The grammar reference at the end
of the book must have been written on Mars). You'll have to find a separate grammar. The grammar explanations are sometimes good, sometimes very
confusing ;eg... how to figure out the classification and implications of hard and soft consonants. I asked a question on this topic, and the class
burst into sympathetic laughter. (Sure, in a tough language like Russian, this is going to happen, but it happens too often.)

6) Wiley's website is confusing. Once you get the hang of it downloading the oral exercises is easy enough. However, some chapters appear to have
transcripts of the exercises (which I found really valuable), and some don't. The material on the alphabet appears in every chapter, etc.

Considering the work that went into this text, it's just a shame that the organization and format isn't clearer.

A great first step, but...
By Juan J. Pena
I just completed the previous edition of this textbook, and I'd say it's a decent enough introduction for anyone who really wants to learn the Russian language. The material is presented in a well-structured and leisurely way. There's much to like about this book. However, as far as I'm concerned, this book contains at least 4 major weaknesses:

1. Russian cases are presented "a little too leisurely". For instance, inanimate accusative case isn't introduced until chapter 7; genitive case singular, not introduced till chapter 10; animate accusative, not until chap. 12; dative, not until chap. 13; genitive plural / animate accusative plural, not until chap. 15; and finally, the instrumental case has to wait till chapters 16 and 17 to be introduced.

2. The basic verbs of motion (so important in Russian) are covered only cursorily in chap. 12. As far as I can remember, there's no significant discussion of the prefixes added to the verbs meaning "to go" to modify them. Also, there's no special mention of the verbs "to fly", "to run", "to swim", etc.

3. Aside from a table in the appendix, there's no serious attempt to explain prepositions and how they relate to the Russian cases.

4. The treatment of time expressions (chap. 7) is severely lacking. The book lazily and sloppily assumes the student will always be asked the time on the hour and/or the half hour. Without going into details, nothing in the book suggest the importance of the genitive case in time expressions.

Still, I don't believe those "faults" completely disqualify this book. In fact, I'm hoping to give it a fresh once-over sometime soon. Currently, I'm using the foundation I acquired from it to diversify my learning experience through online learning tools as well as other books.

Effective and user-friendly tools
By Phil
In both this book and its predecessor ("Feeling Good"), David Burns has done an excellent job of putting tools into our hands so we can change the feelings and behaviors that we want to change. The tools in this book that I've found most helpful include (i) instruments to measure both anxiety and depression, (ii) a "pleasure-predicting sheet," (iii) a daily mood log to help identify and change unwanted feelings, and (iv) tools to help you overcome procrastination.
I agree with another reviewer who said that this book and "Feeling Good" overlap to a great extent, and I recommend this one. You don't need to read "Feeling Good" first, and the worksheets in this "Handbook" are larger and easier to copy and work with.
While Dr. Burns uses tools from cognitive behavioral therapy, I strongly recommend that you also obtain "A Guide to Rational Living," by Albert Ellis. Dr. Ellis invented rational (cognitive) behavioral therapy in the mid-1950s and still writes, lectures, and works with clients. While Burns' books are generally better written than Ellis', Dr. Ellis teaches you how to use cognitive techniques more effectively than Dr. Burns does. Instead of just showing you how to recognize faulty thinking that produces unwanted feelings and behaviors and think of alternative thoughts, Dr. Ellis teaches you how to PERSUADE YOURSELF that this faulty thinking is both irrational and counter-productive. In my view, the difference in their approaches is similar to that between an intellectual discussion and a thoroughly persuasive speech. In order to make the desired changes, you need to convincingly and powerfully persuade yourself to change your thinking.
Together, this book and "A Guide to Rational Living" give you most all of the tools you need to experience the changes that you want in your feelings and behaviors. The approaches in both books require work. Passively reading them (or anything) will not lead to significant changes. The best news of all is this: There is hope! And you can have the tools at your fingertips.

Very important book
By A Customer
This is a crucial book to evaluate for those suffering from depression but skeptical of the effectiveness of most psychologists and self-help books.
Burns is one of the biggest popularizers of cognitive-behavioral therapy, one of extremely few therapeutic forms that have stood up to any scientific scrutiny. Over the last 20 years, CBT has become the predominant form of therapy practiced by psychologists. This book is intensive CBT, much more involving and direct than the form practiced in most psychologists' offices.
Burns takes a very simple approach: he does not place any weight on diagnostic categories or figuring out "why" people behave the way they do or the roots of their problems. Instead, every depressed thought is traced to irrational thought processes. Why those thought processes were developed is irrelevant; the challenge is identifying one's distortions and learning to think more rationally.
Contrary to some reviewers' opinions, I believe this book is best for people who have long-term depression in the medium range (recurrent major depression or dysthymia), with substantial experiences with psychologists. Clearly for more extreme cases - a manic depressive or a suicidal person - the first course of action should be a psychiatrist or psychologist, not a self-help book. This book requires a very high level of involvement and personal responsibility. I believe that it is patients who think of themselves as having a medical problem, seeing psychologists and taking medication for years and perhaps feeling dependent on them, who will at some crisis point become frustrated, develop the energy and motivation to work through a book like this and benefit the most from it. Patients with more minor depression will not feel sufficiently motivated to actually do the exercises, which take a substantial amount of time and clash with other life priorities.
CBT encourages short-term (only 12 weeks on average if seeing a psychologist!) therapy and extreme personal responsibility. For most problems, I believe CBT, either in the form of this book or combined with short-term therapy, is much better than seeing a psychologist long-term. Long-term psychotherapy without very clear goals strongly encourages dependence on the psychologist or medication and reinforces the idea that one is permanently ill. This dependence produces further irrational thinking and can very easily lead to continual depression. Reading a book like this and doing its exercises is an exercise in independence and self-reliance and a major accomplishment in itself. The ability to solve one's own problems is difficult to achieve but extremely powerful - perhaps the only solution - for relieving long-term depression.
Burns feels that virtually no one should be on medication long-term - more than about a year - a view that is somewhat debatable (he excludes, obviously, bipolar and schizophrenic patients). The long-term effectiveness of SSRIs is unproven, but Burns' one-year limit seems purely arbitrary.
CBT is also more art than science - although anyone with any experience with psychologists or self-help books will realize that this is true of the entire field. Often Burns' methods and categorizations of irrational thoughts seem completely arbitrary and hardly authoritative. They could probably use more refinement and clarity. What I think is important is that CBT, and even simply reading Burns' book "Feeling Good", have been demonstrated through scientific means - double-blind testing - to produce considerable improvement.
All in all, this is a book with a clear philosophy that has stood up to scientific scrutiny, unlike psychoanalysis or most other therapeutic methods practiced by psychologists. It requires high involvement and emphasizes personal responsibility, and one has to develop considerable motivation to make any use of it. But the results can be extremely worthwhile.

A moderately effective course in cognitive therapy
By A Customer
Many people don't buy into the whole "root of your problems" mentality that seems to infect the mental health fields nowadays. That's understandable. There certainly is something to be said for a more pragmatic, straightforward approach to the treatment of certain mental states. It is to this group of people that Dr. David Burns addresses his Feeling Good Handbook.
The methods in The Feeling Good Handbook are aimed at helping those suffering from depression, anxiety, and other "mild" mental issues to train themselves into healthy mental patterns. Burns has put together a series of writing exercises and journaling that is intended to help readers recognize fallacies in their thought processes. He then spends a great deal of time on each of these fallacies of thought and how to overcome them.
Burns is an avid supporter of cognitive therapy. It is obvious that Burns feels the best way to mental health is through learning to master these negative thought processes. Furthermore, he states outright that it is possible to train yourself to be positive and happy by following these exercises.
Like most self-help books, Burns' popular book has both positive and negative attributes. Burns has managed to accurately classify the thought traps that those suffering from clinical depression and anxiety fall into. He also presents them in such a way that they are easily memorable and will often return to the reader's mind throughout the course of the day. Burns also includes a surprisingly accurate quiz to gauge the progress of the reader.
However, Burn's book depends very heavily on the reader following his instructions with exactness--and some of them are extremely tedious. This is, perhaps, not the best way to help those suffering with depression. Usually depression saps an individual of their desire to do anything at all. Additionally, Burns tends to be a little over-simplistic about his methods and even more over-enthusiastic about their results.
On its own, The Feeling Good Handbook is a moderately useful book in the amateur diagnosis and treatment of mild depression. When used in conjunction with a counselor who understands cognitive therapy, this book is an excellent tool in training the reader to think in a new way.

The Sea and the Mirror: A Commentary on Shakespeare's "The Tempest" by W. H. Auden

I was disappointed in this book. There were some parts I enjoyed but I felt it was a bit heavy and dragging.

Auden's Christian Conception of Art ......BUT
By M. Hurley
This book,'The Sea and the Mirror'', is billed as 'A Commentary on Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest''; a 50 page introduction (by Arthur Kirsch) and 30 pages of textual notes to support a 70 page poem in three chapters; in other words it is not for the novitiate. It is a poem but a poem written in part prose, Auden does for the Tempest what Joyce did in his work, i.e. mimic styles, in this case (briefly) that of Henry James so you'd better know your way around if you want to get anything at all out of your purchase. Beautifully bound, a lovely cover (from Princeton UP), it is a piece of art but it will not supply anything general, or any clues to the man or his times, so know what you are buying. Auden here is tampering with introjects and (so) if you don't already know the territory you will not find a map here.(Think of a surgeon operating on himself while describing the scene, the anatomy lesson by Dr Tulp, maybe...)

Written during the second war (1942-1944), Auden regarded it as his best work, his Ars Poetica, culminating in his year long lecture series at the New School for Social Research delivered in 1946-47, according to Kirsch. Written after emigrating to the US, one suspects the work was motivated by his then belief that 'poetry makes nothing happen', which (imo) better describes his subjective state after a very frustrating decade, the 1930's. In Act I of the Tempest, Prospero says 'I, thus neglecting worldly ends, all dedicated to closeness and the bettering of my mind with that which, but by being so retires, oer'-priz'd all popular rate....etc., Here Prospero admits neglecting his kingdom, allowing his brother to usurp him etc., you just wish Auden might have made a similar concession and not made up his mind that art was futile i.e. frivolous. Still, if you like stylistic innovation and Christian poetics, this is the meal for you.

- am attempting something which in a way is absurd, to show in a work of art, the limitations of art', explained Auden. Kirsch explains that in the concluding lecture to his New School course he praised Shakespeare for his consciousness of these limitations. 'There's something a little irritating in the determination of the very great artists, like Dante, Joyce and Milton, to create masterpieces and to think themselves important. To be able to devote one's life to art without forgetting that art is frivolous is a tremendous achievement of personal character. Shakespeare never takes himself too seriously". Hmm..

It sounds like Auden's lecture series would be 'more fun' than The Sea and the Mirror, doesn't it. (Unavailable, I think, maybe at the Berg Library but Randall Jarrell's lecture series on Auden was recently published and that's more readable and nicely irreverent). Auden's comment on frivolity etc., has to be taken with a grain of yes, sea salt, and Auden probably needed to take a look in the, yes, mirror when he was making these remarks but, after all, if we believe him, it is all supposed to be frivolous, isn't it? Answer -NO. Nobody believes his obsession with 'fun, 'but, of course, he was merely railing against circumstance, and who can blame him really.

Great, but only IF you first know your way around.

Zeus has punished his son Apollo--god of the sun, music, archery, poetry, and more--by casting him down to earth in the form of a gawky, acne-covered sixteen-year-old mortal named Lester. The only way Apollo can reclaim his rightful place on Mount Olympus is by restoring several Oracles that have gone dark. What is affecting the Oracles, and how can Apollo/Lester do anything about them without his powers? After experiencing a series of dangerous--and frankly, humiliating--trials at Camp Half-Blood, Lester must now leave the relative safety of the demigod training ground and embark on a hair-raising journey across North America. Fortunately, what he lacks in godly graces he's gaining in new friendships--with heroes who will be very familiar to fans of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Heroes of Olympus series. Come along for what promises to be a harrowing, hilarious, and haiku-filled ride. . . .

Great Read
By Tapdurant
Once again Riordan does a wonderful job of blending the old with the new. This story is a superb addition to the line of new mythology he weaves with every book or series. Hopefully he never stops. In the next book let's hope we meet old friends again and are introduced to new as the epic continues.

Another treat from Rick Reordan
By Sandra G. Nagy
Good story line, well-developed characters, great read. Apollo's personality is not so irritating as he becomes kinder, and thus regains some power.

PROLOGUE

He’s come back. Mommy’s asleep or she’s sick again.

I hide and curl up small under the table in the kitchen. Through my fingers I can see Mommy. She is asleep on the couch. Her hand is on the sticky green rug, and he’s wearing his big boots with the shiny buckle and standing over Mommy shouting.

He hits Mommy with a belt. Get up! Get up! You are one fucked-up bitch. You are one fucked-up bitch. You are one fucked-up bitch. You are one fucked-up bitch. You are one fucked-up bitch. You are one fucked-up bitch.

Mommy makes a sobbing noise. Stop. Please stop. Mommy doesn’t scream. Mommy curls up small.

I have my fingers in my ears, and I close my eyes. The sound stops.

He turns and I can see his boots as he stomps into the kitchen. He still has the belt. He is trying to find me.

He stoops down and grins. He smells nasty. Of cigarettes and drink. There you are, you little shit.

A chilling wail wakes him. Christ! He’s drenched in sweat and his heart is pounding. What the fuck? He sits bolt upright in bed and puts his head in hands. Fuck. They’re back. The noise was me. He takes a deep steadying breath, trying to rid his mind and nostrils of the smell of cheap bourbon and stale Camel cigarettes.

CHAPTER ONE

I have survived Day Three Post-Christian, and my first day at work. It has been a welcome distraction. The time has flown by in a haze of new faces, work to do, and Mr. Jack Hyde. Mr. Jack Hyde . . . he smiles down at me, his blue eyes twinkling, as he leans against my desk.

“Excellent work, Ana. I think we’re going to make a great
team.”

Somehow, I manage to curl my lips upward in a semblance of a smile.

“I’ll be off, if that’s okay with you,” I murmur.

“Of course, it’s five thirty. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Good night, Jack.”

“Good night, Ana.”

Collecting my bag, I shrug on my jacket and head for the door.
Out in the early evening air of Seattle, I take a deep breath. It doesn’t begin to fill the void in my chest, a void that’s been present since Saturday morning, a painful hollow reminder of my loss. I walk toward the bus stop with my head down, staring at my feet and contemplating being without my beloved Wanda, my old Beetle . . . or the Audi.

I shut the door on that thought immediately. No. Don’t think about him. Of course, I can afford a car—a nice, new car. I suspect he has been overgenerous in his payment, and the thought leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but I dismiss it and try to keep my mind as numb and as blank as possible. I can’t think about him. I don’t want to start crying again—not out on the street.

The apartment is empty. I miss Kate, and I imagine her lying on a beach in Barbados sipping a cool cocktail. I turn on the flat-screen television so there’s noise to fill the vacuum and provide some semblance of company, but I don’t listen or watch. I sit and stare blankly at the brick wall. I am numb. I feel nothing but the pain. How long must I endure this?

The door buzzer startles me from my anguish, and my heart skips a beat. Who could that be? I press the intercom.

“Delivery for Ms. Steele.” A bored, disembodied voice answers, and disappointment crashes through me. I listlessly make my way downstairs and find a young man noisily chewing gum, holding a large cardboard box, and leaning against the front door. I sign for the package and take it upstairs. The box is huge and surprisingly light. Inside are two dozen long-stemmed, white roses and a card.

Congratulations on your first day at work.
I hope it went well.
And thank you for the glider. That was very thoughtful.
It has pride of place on my desk.
Christian

I stare at the typed card, the hollow in my chest expanding. No doubt, his assistant sent this. Christian probably had very little to do with it. It’s too painful to think about. I examine the roses—they are beautiful, and I can’t bring myself to throw them in the trash. Dutifully, I make my way into the kitchen to hunt down a vase.

And so a pattern develops: wake, work, cry, sleep. Well, try to sleep. I can’t even escape him in my dreams. Gray burning eyes, his lost look, his hair burnished and bright all haunt me. And the music . . . so much music—I cannot bear to hear any music. I am careful to avoid it at all costs. Even the jingles in commercials make me shudder.

I have spoken to no one, not even my mother or Ray. I don’t have the capacity for idle talk now. No, I want none of it. I have become my own island state. A ravaged, war-torn land where nothing grows and the horizons are bleak. Yes, that’s me. I can interact impersonally at work, but that’s it. If I talk to Mom, I know I will break even further—and I have nothing left to break.

I am finding it difficult to eat. By lunchtime on Wednesday, I manage a cup of yogurt, and it’s the first thing I’ve eaten since Friday. I am surviving on a newfound tolerance for lattes and Diet Coke. It’s the caffeine that keeps me going, but it’s making me anxious.

Jack has started to hover over me, irritating me, asking me personal questions. What does he want? I’m polite, but I need to keep him at arm’s length.

I sit and begin trawling through a pile of correspondence addressed to him, and I’m pleased with the distraction of menial work. My e-mail pings, and I quickly check to see who it’s from.

Holy shit. An e-mail from Christian. Oh no, not here . . . not at work.

I note that tomorrow is the gallery opening for your friend’s show, and I’m sure you’ve not had time to purchase a car, and it’s a long drive. I would be more than happy to take you—should you wish.

Let me know.

Tears swim in my eyes. I hastily leave my desk and bolt to the restroom to escape into one of the stalls. Jos’s show. I’d forgotten all about it, and I promised him I’d go. Shit, Christian is right; how am I going to get there?

I clutch my forehead. Why hasn’t Jos phoned? Come to think of it—why hasn’t anyone phoned? I’ve been so absentminded I haven’t noticed that my cell phone has been silent.

Shit! I am such an idiot! I still have it set to forward calls to the BlackBerry. Holy hell. Christian’s been getting my calls—unless he’s just thrown the BlackBerry away. How did he get my e-mail address?

He knows my shoe size; an e-mail address is hardly going to present him with many problems.

Can I see him again? Could I bear it? Do I want to see him? I close my eyes and tilt my head back as grief and longing lance through me. Of course I do.

Perhaps—perhaps I can tell him I’ve changed my mind . . . No, no, no. I cannot be with someone who takes pleasure in inflicting pain on me, someone who can’t love me.

Torturous memories flash through my mind—the gliding, holding hands, kissing, the bathtub, his gentleness, his humor, and his dark, brooding, sexy stare. I miss him. It’s been five days, five days of agony that has felt like an eternity. I cry myself to sleep at night, wishing I hadn’t walked out, wishing that he could be different, wishing that we were together. How long will this hideous overwhelming feeling last? I am in purgatory.

I wrap my arms around my body, hugging myself tightly, holding myself together. I miss him. I really miss him . . . I love him. Simple.

Anastasia Steele, you are at work! I must be strong, but I want to go to Jos’s show, and deep down, the masochist in me wants to see Christian. Taking a deep breath, I head back to my desk.

Hi Christian

Yes, I would appreciate a lift.

Thank you.

Checking my phone, I find that it is still set to forward calls to the BlackBerry. Jack is in a meeting, so I quickly call Jos.

“Hi, Jos. It’s Ana.”

“Hello, stranger.” His tone is so warm and welcoming it’s almost enough to push me over the edge again.

“I can’t talk long. What time should I be there tomorrow for your show?”

“You’re still coming?” He sounds excited.

“Yes, of course.” I smile my first genuine smile in five days as I picture his broad grin.

“Seven thirty.”

“See you then. Good-bye, Jos.”

“Bye, Ana.”

Oh my. I’m going to see Christian, and for the first time in five days, my spirits lift a fraction and I allow myself to wonder how he’s been.

Has he missed me? Probably not like I’ve missed him. Has he found a new submissive? The thought is so painful that I dismiss it immediately. I look at the pile of correspondence I need to sort for Jack and tackle it as I try to push Christian out of my mind once more.

That night in bed, I toss and turn, trying to sleep and it’s the first time in a while I haven’t cried myself to sleep.

In my mind’s eye, I visualize Christian’s face the last time I saw him as when I left. His tortured expression haunts me. I remember he didn’t want me to go, which was odd. Why would I stay when things had reached such an impasse? We were each skirting around our own issues—my fear of punishment, his fear of . . . what? Love?

Turning on my side, I hug my pillow, filled with an overwhelming sadness. He thinks he doesn’t deserve to be loved. Why does he feel that way? Does it have to do with his upbringing? His birth mom, the crack whore? My thoughts plague me into the early hours until eventually I fall into a fitful, exhausted sleep.

The day drags and drags and Jack is unusually attentive. I suspect it’s due to Kate’s plum dress and the black high-heeled boots I’ve stolen from her closet, but I don’t dwell on the thought. I resolve to go clothes shopping with my first paycheck. The dress is looser on me than it was, but I pretend not to notice.

Finally it’s five thirty, and I collect my jacket and purse, trying to quell my nerves. I’m going to see him!

“Do you have a date tonight?” Jack asks as he strolls past my desk on his way out.

“Yes. No. Not really.”

He raises an eyebrow, his interest clearly piqued. “Boyfriend?”

I flush. “No, a friend. An ex-boyfriend.”

“Maybe tomorrow you’d like to come for a drink after work. You’ve had a stellar first week, Ana. We should celebrate.” He smiles and an unknown, unsettling emotion flits across his face, making me uneasy.

Putting his hands in his pockets, he saunters through the double doors. I frown at his retreating back. Drinks with the boss, is that a good idea?

I shake my head. I have an evening of Christian Grey to get through first. How am I going to do this? I hurry into the restroom to make last-minute adjustments.

In the large mirror on the wall, I take a long, hard look at my face. I’m my usual pale self, dark circles around my too-large eyes. I look gaunt, haunted. I wish I knew how to use makeup. I apply some mascara and eyeliner and pinch my cheeks, hoping for some color. Tidying my hair so that it hangs artfully down my back, I take a deep breath. This will have to do.

Nervously I walk through the foyer with a smile and a wave to Claire at Reception. I think she and I could become friends. Jack is talking to Elizabeth as I head for the doors. Smiling broadly, he hurries over to open them for me.

“After you, Ana,” he murmurs.

“Thank you.” I smile, embarrassed.

Outside on the curb, Taylor is waiting. He opens the rear door of the car. I glance hesitantly at Jack, who has followed me out. He’s looking toward the Audi SUV in dismay.

I turn and climb into the back, and there he sits—Christian Grey—wearing his gray suit, no tie, white shirt open at the collar. His gray eyes are glowing.

My mouth dries. He looks glorious except he’s scowling at me. Why?

“When did you last eat?” he snaps as Taylor closes the door behind me.

Crap. “Hello, Christian. Yes, it’s nice to see you, too.”

“I don’t want your smart mouth now. Answer me.” His eyes blaze.

Holy shit. “Um . . . I had a yogurt at lunchtime. Oh—and a banana.”

“When did you last have a real meal?” he asks acidly.

Taylor slips into the driver’s seat, starts the car, and pulls out into the traffic.

I glance up and Jack is waving at me, though how he can see me through the dark glass, I don’t know. I wave back.

“Who’s that?” Christian snaps.

“My boss.” I peek up at the beautiful man beside me, and his mouth is pressed into a hard line.

“Well? Your last meal?”

“Christian, that really is none of your concern,” I murmur, feeling extraordinarily brave.

“Whatever you do concerns me. Tell me.”

No, it doesn’t. I groan in frustration, rolling my eyes heavenward, and Christian narrows his eyes. And for the first time in a long time, I want to laugh. I try hard to stifle the giggle that threatens to bubble up. Christian’s face softens as I struggle to keep a straight face, and a trace of a smile kisses his lovely sculptured lips.

“Well?” he asks, his voice softer.

“Pasta alla vongole, last Friday,” I whisper.

He closes his eyes as fury, and possibly regret, sweeps across his face. “I see,” he says, his voice expressionless. “You look like you’ve lost at least five pounds, possibly more since then. Please eat, Anastasia,” he scolds.

I stare down at the knotted fingers in my lap. Why does he always make me feel like an errant child?

He shifts and turns toward me. “How are you?” he asks, his voice still soft.

Well, I’m shit, really . . . I swallow. “If I told you I was fine, I’d be lying.”

He inhales sharply. “Me, too,” he murmurs and reaches over and clasps my hand. “I miss you,” he adds.

Oh no. Skin against skin.

“Christian, I—”

“Ana, please. We need to talk.”

I’m going to cry. No. “Christian, I . . . please . . . I’ve cried so much,” I whisper, trying to keep my emotions in check.

“Oh, baby, no.” He tugs my hand, and before I know it I’m on his lap. He has his arms around me, and his nose is in my hair.

“I’ve missed you so much, Anastasia,” he breathes.

I want to struggle out of his hold, to maintain some distance, but his arms are wrapped around me. He’s pressing me to his chest. I melt. Oh, this is where I want to be.

I rest my head against him, and he kisses my hair repeatedly. This is home. He smells of linen, fabric softener, body wash, and my favorite smell—Christian. For a moment, I allow myself the illusion that all will be well, and it soothes my ravaged soul.

A few minutes later Taylor pulls to a stop at the curb, even though we’re still in the city.

“Come”—Christian shifts me off his lap—“we’re here.”

What?

“Helipad—on the top of this building.” Christian glances toward the building by way of explanation.

Of course. Charlie Tango. Taylor opens the door and I slide out. He gives me a warm, avuncular smile that makes me feel safe. I smile back.

“I should give you back your handkerchief.”

“Keep it, Miss Steele, with my best wishes.”

I blush as Christian comes around the car and takes my hand. He looks quizzically at Taylor, who stares impassively back at him, revealing nothing.

“Nine?” Christian says to him.

“Yes, sir.”

Christian nods as he turns and leads me through the double doors into the grandiose foyer. I revel in the feel of his hand and his long, skilled fingers curled around mine. The familiar pull is there—I’m drawn, Icarus to his sun. I’ve been burned already, and yet here I am again.

Reaching the elevators, he presses the “call” button. I peek up at him, and he’s wearing his enigmatic half smile. As the doors open, he releases my hand and ushers me in.

The doors close and I risk a second peek. He glances down at me, and it’s there in the air between us, that electricity. It’s palpable. I can almost taste it, pulsing between us, drawing us together.

“Oh my,” I gasp as I bask briefly in the intensity of this visceral, primal attraction.

“I feel it, too,” he says, his eyes clouded and intense.

Desire pools dark and deadly in my groin. He clasps my hand and grazes my knuckles with his thumb, and all my muscles clench tightly, deliciously, deep inside me.

How can he still do this to me?

“Please don’t bite your lip, Anastasia,” he whispers.

I gaze up at him, releasing my lip. I want him. Here, now, in the elevator. How could I not?

“You know what it does to me,” he murmurs.

Oh, I still affect him. My inner goddess stirs from her five-day sulk.

Abruptly the doors open, breaking the spell, and we’re on the roof. It’s windy, and despite my black jacket, I’m cold. Christian puts his arm around me, pulling me into his side, and we hurry across to where Charlie Tango stands in the center of the helipad, with its rotor blades slowly spinning.

A tall, blond, square-jawed man in a dark suit leaps out and, ducking low, runs toward us. Shaking hands with Christian, he shouts above the noise of the rotors.

“Ready to go, sir. She’s all yours!”

“All checks done?”

“Yes, sir.”

“You’ll collect her around eight thirty?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Taylor’s waiting for you out front.”

“Thank you, Mr. Grey. Safe flight to Portland. Ma’am.” He salutes me. Without releasing me, Christian nods, ducks down, and leads me to the helicopter door.

Once inside he buckles me firmly into my harness, cinching the straps tight. He gives me a knowing look and his secret smile.

“This should keep you in your place,” he murmurs. “I must say I like this harness on you. Don’t touch anything.”

I flush a deep crimson, and he runs his index finger down my cheek before handing me the headphones. I’d like to touch you, too, but you won’t let me. I scowl. Besides, he’s pulled the straps so tight I can barely move.

He sits in his seat and buckles himself in, then starts running through all his preflight checks. He’s just so competent. It’s very alluring. He puts on his headphones and flips a switch and the rotors speed up, deafening me.

Turning, he gazes at me. “Ready, baby?” His voice echoes through the headphones.

“Yes.”

He grins his boyish grin. Wow—I’ve not seen it for so long.

“Sea-Tac tower, this is Charlie Tango Golf—Golf Echo Hotel, cleared for takeoff to Portland via PDX. Please confirm, over.”

The disembodied voice of the air traffic controller answers, issuing instructions.

“Roger, tower, Charlie Tango set, over and out.” Christian flips two switches, grasps the stick, and the helicopter rises slowly and smoothly into the evening sky.

Seattle and my stomach drop away from us, and there’s so much to see.

“We’ve chased the dawn, Anastasia, now the dusk,” his voice comes through on the headphones. I turn and gape at him in surprise.

What does this mean? How is it that he can say the most romantic things? He smiles, and I can’t help my shy smile.

“As well as the evening sun, there’s more to see this time,” he says.

The last time we flew to Seattle it was dark, but this evening the view is spectacular, literally out of this world. We’re up among the tallest buildings, going higher and higher.

“Escala’s over there.” He points toward the building. “Boeing there, and you can just see the Space Needle.”

I crane my head. “I’ve never been.”

“I’ll take you—we can eat there.”

“Christian, we broke up.”

“I know. I can still take you there and feed you.” He glares at me.

I shake my head and decide not to antagonize him. “It’s very beautiful up here, thank you.”

“Impressive, isn’t it?”

“Impressive that you can do this.”

“Flattery from you, Miss Steele? But I’m a man of many talents.”

“I’m fully aware of that, Mr. Grey.”

He turns and smirks at me, and for the first time in five days, I relax a little. Perhaps this won’t be so bad.

“How’s the new job?”

“Good, thank you. Interesting.”

“What’s your boss like?”

“Oh, he’s okay.” How can I tell Christian that Jack makes me uncomfortable? Christian glances at me.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

“Aside from the obvious, nothing.”

“The obvious?”

“Oh, Christian, you really are very obtuse sometimes.”

“Obtuse? Me? I’m not sure I appreciate your tone, Miss Steele.”

“Well, don’t, then.”

His lips twitch into a smile. “I have missed your smart mouth, Anastasia.”

I gasp and I want to shout, I’ve missed you—all of you—not just your mouth! But I keep quiet and gaze out the glass fishbowl that is Charlie Tango’s windshield as we continue south. The dusk is to our right, the sun low on the horizon—large, blazing fiery orange—and I am Icarus again, flying far too close.

Beautiful new cover and bonus material.
By DeejVS
I will be collecting all 3 movie tie-in editions of the Fifty Shades trilogy. The cover is beautiful, and the bonus material will not disappoint! Please note that this is NOT Darker from Christian's POV as some people seem to think. That book is being released later on in the year.

Not the greatest love story but I like Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele
By Genie Saint Louis
I have read the FIFTY SHADES trilogy of books several times. I have read "Grey" (Christian Grey's first person narration of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY) as well and look forward to reading Christian Grey's first person narration for FIFTY SHADES DARKER. I ordered the new editiion of FIFTY SHADES DARKER because it includes a bonus excerpt from Christian's viewpoint.
I know, I need to get a life!
