About the Author

A former marine, the late CHARLES E. DOLE taught flight safety for twenty-eight years to officers of the U.S. Air Force, Army, and Navy, as well as at the University of Southern California.

The late JAMES E. LEWIS was an associate professor of Aeronautical Science at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, former aeronautical engineer for the Columbus Aircraft Division of Rockwell International, and retired Ohio National Guard military pilot.

JOSEPH R. BADICK has over forty years of flight experience in single, multi-engine, land /seaplane aircraft. Rated in commercial rotor-craft and gliders, with the highest rating of (A.T.P.) Airline Transport Pilot. A licensed airframe and powerplant mechanic, with inspection authorization (I.A.), he has installed numerous aircraft aerodynamic performance (S.T.C's) Supplemental Type Certificates, with test flight checks. He holds a Ph.D. (ABD) in Business from Northcentral University of Arizona and a Master's degree in Aeronautical Science. He was a Naval Officer for 30 years as an Aeronautical Engineer Duty Officer (AEDO), involved in all aspects of aircraft maintenance, logistics, acquisition, and test/evaluation. Currently he is a professor of aviation at a community college in the Career Pilot/Aviation Management degree programs.

BRIAN A. JOHNSON is a former airline and corporate pilot who holds a multi-engine Airline Transport Pilot certificate, in addition to Commercial pilot single-engine land/sea privileges. He is an active instrument and multi-engine Gold Seal flight instructor with an advanced ground instructor rating. He holds a Master's degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and currently serves in a faculty position for a two-year Career Pilot/Aviation Management degree program, in addition to serving as an adjunct faculty member in the Aeronautical Science department of a major aeronautical university.

Unforgettable Historical Fiction!

The Japanese Invasion of China in 1937 is a dark period in history. The Japanese committed many horrible crimes and atrocities on the Chinese population. Red Sorghum in very graphic graphic detail describes some of these atrocities and their impact on the Chinese civilian population.
But the book is much more than that. WWII does play a major role in the book, but the book is also a look into Chinese culture, family, and is such a moving window on China during this time period.
This is not an easy read. The translation is very good, but the book is very detailed and again at times very graphic. I do not like to bash books like the Good Earth or The Single Pebble as many people do. I agree that neither book was written by a Chinese person and I understand some of the criticism that orginates from that fact. I enjoyed both books and think they are valuable. HOwever, if you are from the school that demands a Chinese author and a Chinese voice to Chinese literature you must read Mo Yan. He is a gifted writer and he brings to life some very difficult times in Chinese History.
This is a very powerful book and parts of it will stay with you long after you have read the book. Again, this is not an easy book to read but well worth the effort.

brutal, real

I have never read such a brutal, graphic novel. It is truly rare for an author to capture the horror of evil so clearly or powerfully. Reading this book is like being beaten up.
At the same time, it is about life. Within the tragedy is a story about people facing and overcoming evil. Because it does not look away from the horror, the hope it implies is authentic. Thus this book distinguishes itself.
I recommend this book for a mature reader because of its powerful content. It will not leave you unchanged. You will shiver, and think.
It is an allegory for the communist takeover of China, and the film that this book inspired won the "Golden Bear" award. An old, leprous landlord represents the corruption of the Guomingdan period. But his murder enables a young woman to take over, and clean up the winery, representing China. The book shows peasants glorified, a new role for women, the breaking down of class barriers, and a brave struggle against Japanese invaders. All of this must have made it dear to Chinese communists!
Perhaps a few Western readers will imagine that all this makes it a less compelling book, however. I don't think so, and I suggest reading it yourself. At least see the movie, which follows the book fairly well.

All in all...I'm glad to have read "Red Sorghum"...but at times it seemed overly "obtuse"...with a great deal of "back and forthing" to and from previous and past 'times' 'events'.. A bit difficult to 'follow' at times.....

A deliciously wicked take on casino/real-estate mogul Donald J. Trump. Drawing on a wealth of sources, Hurt (For All Mankind, 1988, etc.) offers an exhaustive, gossipy rundown on a golden boy of the so-called greed decade who lost his touch--and way--in the hard realities of the 1990's. Capitalizing on political contacts made by his father, who amassed a fortune building and managing apartment houses for working-class residents of N.Y.C.'s outer boroughs, the erstwhile Wunderkind made a flashy name for himself in Manhattan property development. Moving on to Atlantic City's glittery gambling dens, the cocksure Trump (who turns 47 this June) took a great fall when his faith in ever-rising asset prices proved unfounded. In the wake of an acrimonious divorce that ended a 13- year marriage to the Czech-born Ivana (inducing bankers to review Trump's balance sheet with greater care), the ambitious hustler's leveraged empire and its trophy holdings now languish in undeclared bankruptcy. While Hurt doesn't wholly dismiss the possibility of a comeback, he leaves little doubt that Trump is bucking tough odds. Nor does the author overlook many opportunities to dish the dirt on his subject's star-crossed personal life and dubious business practices. Trump's actions & words were just as reprehensible then as they are now

Knowing my strange fascination with all things Trump, a friend and fellow librarian gave me a copy of this 1993 book after her own library weeded it from the biography section. Somehow I'd missed it during my quest to read any books by or about Donald J. Trump. I can't thank my friend enough, though the outcome surely does not match her expectations. This book has scared me straight, so to speak, and has turned me against the man, seemingly forever.

When Harry Hurt III compiled his copious notes for this publication, he had only Trump's real estate deals of the 1980s and early 1990s to draw upon. But add those to the complexities caused by DT's overlapping relationships with Ivana Trump and Marla Maples, and the result reads like a blow-by-blow scorecard of crimes and misdemeanors. Here are the details of his early exploits in the real estate markets of both Manhattan and Atlantic City. Here are all of the negotiations he made with literally dozens (if not hundreds) of banks, using presumed building equity and future potential worth to ensure repayment of the loans. Or maybe not. Here are skazillions of false rumors deliberately leaked to the media in an effort to generate publicity of any kind. Add concrete contracts with mob-related outfits and the intricate and lawful demands of the New Jersey Gaming Commission, and you've got the prime ingredients for a made-for-TV movie. Or perhaps a Sopranos episode. And that's not even including the days spent arguing over the terms of a nuptial agreement of a marriage that's quickly heading south. And Hurt didn't even have to invent any of it. Just his presentation of the facts is enough to set our heads a-shaking. The dollar amounts involved will do that, as you might expect.

Subsequent Trump biographers have covered many of these endeavors, but not necessarily in such detail. Self-professed real estate moguls have lives that can only be described as exceedingly complex. We who reside in the trenches can breathe sighs of relief as we turn these pages, knowing we'll never have to deal with such Trump-sized issues. We'll never have to fight business battles in courtrooms or have our most intimate moments scrutinized in gossip columns or in front page photos. Hurt mentions a few personal items I don't recall coming across in other books: the fact that DT used both liposuction and diet pills to get rid of some extra poundage, and that he had scalp reduction surgery in order to remedy his hair loss. A decade and a half later, we can pretty much judge how successful those attempts at physical improvement were.

But something that stands out is the number of times Trump's then-total worth is projected and questioned in this book. DT always claims it's more than a billion dollars; Hurt and his sources calculate that the amount is far, far less and has always been far, far less. I don't recall (and can find no retrospective proof) that Donald Trump sued Harry Hurt III for misrepresenting his fortune after this particular book came out in 1993. And yet that's exactly what Trump did when author Timothy O'Brien released "TrumpNation" in 2005. In his text, O'Brien set the developer's total assets at $150 to $250 million, while DT insisted it was five or six billion. Trump felt strongly enough to sue for libel. And it wasn't until mid-July 2009 that a New Jersey judge dismissed the case. Technically, O'Brien won. But if you read any of the accounts of the incident, Trump makes it seem as though *he* did. "My net worth fluctuates," he says. As it does time and time again in this older glance at his life and his lifestyle.

It's also interesting to come across the names of some folks who make cameos in DT's life during this time period and have since ended up on "Celebrity Apprentice." Herschel Walker was a New Jersey General before he became a Dallas Cowboy. And when the USFL folded, General owner Donald J. Trump still owed $13 million on player contracts with Herschel Walker and Doug Flutie. He found ways to get out of paying them both, according to this text. Why would Walker later agree to be on a reality TV show with his former employer under such circumstances, only to let the man kick him around again? Odd.

Carol Alt is mentioned several times here as well: sometimes as a friend to Trump, and sometimes as a possible romantic conquest. Now we have to wonder how ethical it is for a "Celebrity Apprentice" candidate to have once been that close to the theoretical boss. I guess we won't know how many others have been in that situation. And after reading this book, we should also wonder why Ivanka and Don Jr. still talk to and work for their father. What is this hold he appears to have on everyone?

How much has changed, more than a decade and a half after the epilogue of this book was written? The Trump Organization is involved in the same kinds of building projects, but now in a few new places like Chicago and Dubai. The New Jersey casinos are still in trouble and are making news every day, with speculation about bankruptcy continuing to drift in the air. But because of the success of "The Apprentice," Donald Trump still appears to be riding an American high. Yet if people go back and read this well-written and well-documented biography, they might find retrospective reason to hold him in lower esteem. I see now that his actions and words have always gone beyond arrogance and well beyond the realm of simple male chauvinism. When I search my thesaurus for a more intensive word to describe his approach to life, my eyes land first on the word "vainglorious," and then, finally, on "peacocky." That'll do, I think.

When is rape not criminal? Presumably, when it is not actually rape, but that's an issue in need of careful consideration.

Every copy of this book that I have seen includes a "Notice to the reader" as a pasted-in addendum to the front matter of the book, a "statement of Ivana Trump " intended to qualify certain statements made by Ivana in a deposition in which the former Mrs. Trump stated that she was raped by her husband.
In qualifying her testimony, Mrs Trump states the following, along with a statement. indicat�ng that her statement can only be used in its entirety.

"I wish to say that on one occasion during 1989, Mr. Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently toward me than he had during our marriage. As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness, which he normally exhibited toward me, was absent. I referred to this as a "rape," but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.
"Any contrary conclusion would be an incorrect and most unfortunate interpretation of my statement which I do not want to be interpreted in a speculative fashion and I do not want the press or media to misconstrue any of the facts set forth above. All I wish is for this matter to be put to rest.
This statement can only be released and used in its entirety.

This is an important, highly charged expose of Trump's past

The Lost Tycoon is an exhaustive depiction of Trump's scams, cons and lies. Here are just a few take aways:

- [ ] Trump used illegal labor from Poland to tear down the old building on the site where Trump Towers would be built. The laborers slept on the construction site, and many were never paid. (And they destroyed the Art Deco statues and grill work in order to meet the construction deadlines. Trump apparently ordered this destruction, despite promising to preserve the statues, etc.)

- [ ] Trump Plaza, in Atlantic City, met its state minority contractor quota by listing Mike Tyson as a minority contractor.

- [ ] Trump used Damin Aviation to ferry himself and others back and forth to Atlantic City. Joe Weichselbaum headed it up until he was indicted on illegal drug smuggling (Hurt wonders if there was any truth to the rumor that Weichselbaum procured cocaine for Trump's casino high rollers). Then the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) forced Weichselbaum out. Weichselbaum pled guilty and was sent to prison. A year later, Weichselbaum's girlfriend paid $2.35 million for two apartments in Trump Towers, claiming the money was her own. When Weichselbaum was paroled, he moved into the apartments (now a duplex) and told the parole board he was going to be Trump's helicopter consultant.

- [ ] In 1989, three of Trump's top Atlantic City executives were killed in a helicopter crash following a meeting with Trump. Upon hearing of their deaths, Trump told a colleague that he couldn't resist milking the deaths for publicity. He then falsely claimed he was supposed to be on that flight.

- [ ] Ivana worked hard at Trump's hotels and casinos, despite his constant attempts to belittle her work (during their famous divorce, he once claimed she stayed home and did the laundry).

- [ ] The book reports on Ivana's divorce-deposition testimony where she claimed that Trump violently raped her and tore out chunks of her hair because he believed her plastic surgeon had harmed him by performing a poor scalp reduction surgery. He was in great pain, and he blamed Ivana. Ivana disclaims the rape in a letter inserted in the beginning of the book. In it she claims that her use of the term "rape" only meant that Trump was "not loving" to her.

Story after story about Trump's temperament fill this book. Trump seems to have lurched from one temper tantrum to the next, from one lie to the next, from one con to the next. He claimed his wife and children were important to him, but business and money seem to always have been his true love. As set out in this book, there are two constants with regard to Trump's personality: if the truth doesn't suit Trump, he changes it, and he will not tolerate criticism of any kind. This is an important, highly charged expose of Trump's past. Unfortunately, it only covers Trump's life up until the early 1990's. Nonetheless, this is a book that should be read by voters in this election year.

Weber back to his strengths, with help from Flint

For me, there's a real tension between Davids Weber's strengths as a storyteller and the current state of Honor Harrington's life. Weber's strengths are exploring a person's or small group's heroism as they plug away at their own part of a grand unfolding series of events. That's the rich and heady broth on which the original Honor books were built, and a mighty fine edifice they are. However, the more successful Honor is, as a Navy officer in a nation at war, success is going to promote her off the command deck of her own ship, and even (as it has now) off the squadron flag deck. As she's become more a fleet commander and politician, the series has (of necessity) wandered away from its storytelling roots to become something larger and more epic. Honor is still a character I adore, but her stories are not the kind of space opera I like best, which comes down to individual actions within a larger scheme of things.

Additionally, as the action has progressed, there are now a ridiculous number of characters and theaters of action, far too many to track in one linear series of novels. Weber (and his partner in crime, Eric Flint) have wisely diversified the series to take advantage of both the storytelling opportunities and to wrestle the beast into something resembling coherent novel-sized pieces.

The books of the Honorverse now seem to have three main streams. One, of course, is the story of Honor, which I will keep reading, only because that's where the grand unfolding of the galactic history occurs (and because I adore Honor -- did I mention that?). Another is the books like The Shadow of Saganami (The Saganami Island) which can (and do) focus on the antics of a single starship or a small squadron of them -- this is the space opera where Weber truly shines. And finally, there is the espionage-based series of books that started with Crown of Slaves (Honor Harrington) and is continued in this book.

The three threads form one glorious, galaxy-wide saga that I wouldn't miss for the world. This book is a worthy addition to this fictional enterprise, a great deal of fun to read, and an interesting progression in the story as a whole. I'm not sure it stands alone -- while it does repeat some action from other books, there are also references to things that are not wholly explained (such as "what Harrington did to Giscard at Lovat").

However, as a piece of the puzzle, it's an excellent book. Since it focuses on individuals for the most part (and task forces at the largest), the action is firmly where Weber excels. Flint's presence seems to keep the exposition of new technology to small enough chunks that they go down fairly easily. It's clear that both authors have a great fondness for their characters (although they are not at all afraid to kill off those same characters when the plot demands it). If motivations are sometimes described with a heavy hand, the book makes up for such awkwardness with the breakneck pace of the action, the way in which various threads are brought together, and the tantilizing hints of future problems that are clearly having their groundwork laid.

There are small things to like about this book, too, one of which is an extended joke about how even well-educated people miss historical references all the time. Another is the way in which the friendship between Zilwicki and Cachat is handled realistically. And Palane has two moments which are still sticking with me even after finishing the book. Finally, there are all kinds of new characters, some of whom will undoubtedly rise to prominence as this franchise works it way to its grand conclusion (if there ever really is one).

If you like the Honorverse, this is a must-read. Rollicking good fun that advances the larger plot in intriguing ways.

If you've never read anything in the Honorverse, don't start with this. Go start with On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington). If you like that, keep reading. You'll get here soon enough, and when you do, you'll enjoy this book a lot more than if you read it cold.

Great read from my favorite author, I have read all the Honor Harrington Novels (more than once)! I can't believe someone has not as yet made movies from these books.

Mailing it In

First, and fair warning,

Now, before I get too criticized, I like Weber in general, and the Honorverse in particular (although much like Patrick O'Brien and Forester themselves, Honor got too big, too fast, and so now the action has to be with secondary characters and series like this away from the main story arc!) I think "On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington)" is on a par with other classics of military Sci-Fi like Heinlein's "Starship Troopers," Drake's "Hammer's Slammers," or Pournelle's "Janissaries." And while the main arc books have been uneven, "War of Honor (Honor Harrington Series, Book 10)" is classic, "In Enemy Hands (Honor Harrington Series, Book 7)" not so much, overall there is a real compelling quality that makes you come back for more. In some ways the side projects, such as the short stories and "Cluster" books, are even better at times. So trust me, I am a fan. That said...

"Disappointing" and "insulting" seem too mild to describe this volume. First of all, the entire "Torch" arc is contrived far beyond the rest of the series. An improbable revolt on a slave planet that is somehow not massively guarded and protected, a teen queen (literally) plucked at random from another story line, ruthless slave terrorists who seem mild even compared to real ones today, a hodge-podge of cute but discordant "odds and ends" characters from the rest of the series, most of whom should have different agendas and priorties than they actually do... And so on. "I have a duty and interest in supporting a galactic power, but I think I will toss all of that away because Queen Berry is so sweet it's magnetic..." And the ridiculous inbred amusement park in space family is too, too, too much. Sorry. The creation of this plot line had to involve beer. A lot of it!

Everyone has already commented about the endless scripted conversations, tedious oratory, etc. Also, the editing is really slipping. One gets the impression the publisher wants a huge book, for us to pay for in hardcover, and using a copy editor would just impede the cash flow! In one chapter I read three different plot lines, all of which began with the same cliche! Seriously. The writing has become hackneyed and repetitive. I guess in the future all women will have "crooked smiles." (You think by then surgeons could correct that?) But where this book utterly fails is in what passes for action. Most of this is espionage. Weber excels when he is describing future space battles with a science of missile technology, ship speeds, etc., that are technically impressive, bordering on a Physics lesson. But get on the ground, especially in a covert setting, and he reverts to purely 20th Century plot devices that put one in mind of "Get Smart" or Hogan's Heroes." Apparently high tech future cultures will not have the facial recognition software, substance detectors, or advanced access controls that are already becoming common in the 21st Century. Need to penetrate the most secure research lab of a paranoid genetically-designed super-villain? Just get Cachat and Zilwicki (aka, Newkirk and LeBeau) to find some clever disguises and even more clever banter, and then just walk on in. Meanwhile back on the slave world, we have programmed assasins with poisons clever enough to defeat advanced security procedures, but slow enough to save the lives of all the main characters (again, thank heavens 20th Century nerve agents are no longer around.) And on, and on, and on. For me it's not that the book is tedious (it is), or wordy (it is), or even painfully contrived (it is.) It's simply that it is bad.

So why 2-stars? Well, because this comes (at least in hardcover) with a huge bonus: the Weber Honorverse CD with it seems to have most/all of his previous stuff, much of which is totally brilliant! So for the price of a bad hardcover (and it is now under $10 new), you essentially get a full library of much, much better books! That's a lot more value for your money, like $100s worth, and you get to see how truly good Weber can be (there's a reason these are all best sellers!) This book has the feeling of something Weber & Flint just "mailed in" to meet a publisher's deadline and maybe make a few tongue-in cheek jokes along the way to a paycheck. Both are capable of far better than this mess, so if you bought this book and were disappointed, please don't just pitch it away. Plug in that CD and see how good Weber can be when he is not just, "mailing it in."

Good Book!!!

Hi, I a Management Information Systems major from Mississippi. I bought the book for Computer Science Level 3 class and I must say I like this book. In the past, I've had Java 6 Illuminated for Computer Science I (good book), then Data Structures and Algorithms (good amount of information but not as user friendly) which was for Computer Science II, and now this book for level 3. I didn't think it was going to get any better than the book I had from Level 1, but I think this one does that. It gives you the basics along with the advanced topics and is very user friendly with the examples included in the book. Instead of chapter after chapter of information crammed into a book without an adequate amount of examples. This is a keeper even after class is over. Great Book!!!

This book walks through the basics, and some of the advanced, operations, methods, and classes used in Java programming today.

Even with limited computer experience, and zero programming experience, this book is easy enough to follow.

There are examples of programs, and even online resources to help one learn what works, what doesn't, and why.

Programming is more of an art than a science, but this walks you through the technical aspects in such a way as to not stifle your creativity too much.

Complicated Book

The book is very expensive and provide unclear instructions. I am not a programmer and have very little programming experience. I purchased the book because it was required for a college course. I figured that if I read the book I would be fine. Unfortunately, that was not the case, I was confused in every chapter. The Arthur used jargon that is familiar to seasoned programmers.
I have found other books to be more useful than this one. If you have a seasoned programmer, this book may be right for you. If you are not a season programmer or a beginner/novice, I would recommend to look somewhere else.

You are about to venture on a journey about sugar, its effects on your body, and what you can do to change your habits. Some of the information you’ll pick up along this journey will shock you, other information will enlighten you, but above all, you will finish the journey knowing exactly what you can do to avoid committing suicide by sugar.

Before you begin your journey, you should know that today, when people say “sugar” or “sucrose,” they are usually referring to the sweetener made by beet, cane, and corn. The sugar and corn sweetener industries, however, do not do this. To the industries, “sugar” comes from beet or cane, not corn. “Sweetener” or “corn sweetener,” to the industries, means it comes from corn. In this book, I use the word “sugar” to mean the substance that comes from beet, cane, and corn, except in the section titled “Fructose Roulette” (see page 60), where I speak specifically about sugar (beet or cane) and corn sweetener.

Your journey begins with my story. As a sugar addict, I came close to committing sugar suicide.� I would quit but then would go back to sugar, and you probably will also. Don’t blame yourself. Just say, “Tomorrow will be a better day,” and it will. Many of you will identify with my story. Over the years, I have heard variations of my story from many people.

The core of my early work started from the proposition that many people who eat too much sugar are sick too much of the time. I certainly was. After many years of abusing my body with sugar (unknowingly), I finally came to the conclusion that sugar must do something bad to the immune system. I researched a concept called homeostasis (the balance of all the systems in the body), and bingo, the whole story came together. I found out that sugar upsets this delicate balance in the body. I also learned what sugar does to the immune system.

The next stop along your journey will take you into new territory. First, you will learn all the ways sugar is ruining your health. Sugar addiction, according to studies cited by Appleton & Jacobs, is more addictive than cocaine! If someone has never had an addiction to sugar he or she must have very enlightened parents--or be living in the rural area of some remote part of the world.

On p. 10 the authors list 31 types of sugar. Some are ones many of us have thought of as healthful, such as agave, honey, molasses, raw sugar and maple syrup. But just because they are natural doesn't mean they are healthful.

Chapter 2 lists 140 reasons why sugar is ruining our health. Each of these has footnotes at the back with scientific studies to back them up. Chapter 3 shows how sugar throws off our body's homeostasis, disrupting the balance of minerals. Chapter 4 teaches us about how sugar destabilizes our blood sugar, as we learn about glycemic index, glycemic load, 8 things to consider when choosing a carbohydrate, as well as the dangers of the oral glucose tolerance test and better alternatives to use.

In chapter 5 we get the hard facts about soft drinks (you really won't want to have another one after reading this, I promise!) We learn how to calculate our BMI (body mass index) to see if we are overweight, or even obese. (Currently 74.1% of Americans are overweight!) We learn to interpret deceptive labels, and to calculate the number of teaspoons of sugar in a product. We uncover the horrors of high fructose corn syrup, and how it has a double whammy in creating the obesity epidemic: it becomes fat faster than glucose or sucrose, and it releases the hormone ghrelin which stimulates the appetite. We also discover the alarming truth of what happens when you cook food--how it creates toxic byproducts called AGEs that age you. (If you must cook, steam at low temperatures, and use water.) As the author of a raw food diet book, I was pleasantly surprised that Nancy went into such detail about this.

Chapter 6 discusses some of the major sugar-related diseases and conditions: obesity, hypoglycemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dementia, cancer and even epilepsy. Chapter 7 gives us the strategies to fight sugar addiction, choosing from 3 different food plans that involve 5 food categories. There are a few recipes that include sweet potatoes and beets. (When we get off the intense sugars, vegetables like these taste very sweet and satisfying!)

At the end of the book is a glossary, resource guide, recommended reading, and plenty of footnotes to support the authors' claims. There is also a page on how to order a Body Monitor Test Kit which helps you figure out, through urine tests you do at home, whether your body is in homeostasis or not.

This book is easy to read and a must for the vast majority of eaters--carnivores, frugivores, vegetarians, vegans, etc. All parents and teachers need to read this, no matter how much they think they know about the dangers of sugar.

If only everyone would read this and accept the message

I was a fan of Lick the Sugar Habit. I've read it and re-read it for motivation. I've also read Sugar blues, Sugar Busters and every other anti-sugar book. After 20 years of informally studying nutrition and trying many different ways of eating I have definately come to the conclusion that SUGAR is the main reason for the poor health that plagues so many of us. It has really only been used in significant qualtity for the last 100 years. Prior to that it was a treat to be consumed in small quantities on rare ocassions. Cancer, Heart Disease, Obesity?? They are rocketing off the charts...especially in the last couple of decades. The rise in these diseases correlates quite perfectly to the rise in Sugar consumption. The addition of HFCS in the mid 70's really added fuel to the fire.

The solution to so much of our suffering (and impending financial doom as we struggle to pay for the costs associated with these diseases) is ridiculously simple......return to a sugar free whole foods diet like the one that sustained our ancestors for MILLIONS of years. Sugar IS a drug. It is added to so many processed foods and the makers of those foods know exactlly what they are doing. They need to get you hooked...and they have. Of all the people I know, I can't think of one who doesn't eat mostly processed sugared foods. Bring it up in conversation and they will acknowledge that their diet sucks but no one wants to take any REAL steps at correcting it. I thinks so many people have associated suffering/deprivation with improving their diet. This is because so many people are making half assed changes. Sugar is a drug and the only way to free yourself from its grasp it to quit it completely. Can an alcoholic "cut back"....No. Of course not. My only problem with Suicide by Sugar is that it seems to preach a bit of moderation when it should be preaching abstinance. Some of the foods suggested in the food plans are also not things I'd consider eating as my first choice....too many crappy carbs as opposed to good ones. Overall the book is awesome though.

Very informative. Definitely worth the read.

The case is made against sugar. The problem is that sugar is so addictive your brain tells you not to eat it and yet you crave it. A continual struggle but if you can overcome using sugar your health will improve enormously.
