No respect for Maple 'Document' mode

This book completely ignores the very impressive 'document' mode in Maple. Thompson agues for the use of the 'workbook' mode of entry instead. As a new user of Maple I have found the document mode to be a more natural and reliable way to enter equations. The visual representation is very reinforcing, compared to the workbook method. Having said that, if you like the Maple workbook mode of entry, then this would be an excellent resource for you.

MYFAROG is a wonderful addition to any roleplaying fans bookshelf. This is a single system book meaning it is comprised of everything you'll need to sit down and play, any additional aids are optional.
Crack MyFAROG open and you'll find a well organized table of contents and be wisked away to Thule a land of danger, fantasy, and fierce foes. Character creation is simple and the rules give you enough flexibility to game with anyone from the age of 8 to 108.
MYFAROG isn't overly long and lacks the art fluff that would in the end just make it much more expensive to get via print on demand.
Thule is a world like our own but also very different, fans of fantasy will fell right at home.
Lastly it must be mentioned the writer is of some notoriety and has many accusations flung at him, the same could be said of many writers (H. P Lovecraft, Oscar Wilde, Ayn Rand, Lewis Caroll). This is a riew of MYFAROG not Mr. Vikernes.
If you want a wonderful role playing game that introduce some new concepts and has elements of all the things that attract us to role playing games this book is perfect for you.

so it's like every other RPG out there

Some of the reviews for this game are ridiculously unintelligent. They call it sexist because when generating a character, men are more likely to be strong... this follows the truths of reality, since men are, on average, stronger than women, and, on average, have a higher genetic potential for strength development. That is not the game being sexist, that is the game being realistic. The only way you can consider this game sexist or racist, is if you are blinded by the cultural Marxist narratives that our societies are being subjected to. Another example: in the game, different races have different aptitudes... so it's like every other RPG out there, why single out MYFAROG? If you want a realistic rules set, a fascinating setting, and to learn about European culture and values, than you should get this game. Unless of course you think that learning about European culture and values is racist. If you do... you might be the racist yourself. -Daniel

People love to hate/love Varg Vikernes

People love to hate/love Varg Vikernes, the author of this role-playing game. It's unfortunate that everything he creates is always looked at through those filters, because whether you love or hate the man his game deserves better than that. It deserves to be looked at with an open and honest view, which I will try to present below.

I play a lot of Tabletop RPGs. Some are excellent, and some are crap in my opinion, while most fall somewhere inbetween. MYFAROG falls on the higher side of this middle ground, in that I think as a game and setting it is really quite good!

I was at first intimidated by the charts and tables of modifiers and optional rules, but after reading it through I quickly realised that this is one of the most modular RPGs I own. It has a solid core which is actually quite fast once you get playing, with plenty of extra crunch available if you want to take it to a higher level of meta and crunch. Basically, you can make this work as a rules light or a rules heavy game if you prefer with great ease and consistency.

The lore is really evocative, and I particularly love the way the Ettins and EtunahaimaR fit into the world. There is a ton of information on the gods of Th�le, as well as its geography, people, holidays, and traditions. Some people are offended by parts of this, but guess what? It's a role-playing game... you don't have to play it as written if you don't like legend A or tradition B or the way peoples C treat peoples D.

About the Author

Patricia Vadasy, Ph.D., is Senior Researcher at Washington Research Institute in Seattle, Washington, where she conducts research on early reading instruction. She is most interested in research that may help children at risk for reading disabilities and children who are English language learners. Patricia and her colleagues have developed programs that paraeducator tutors can effectively use to supplement reading instruction for beginning readers.

The collection of activities in Ladders to Literacy is intended to provide the grist for developing concepts about literacy and preparing for reading and writing instruction in ways that are developmentally appropriate and sensitive to the diversity in kindergarten classrooms. By promoting abilities known to influence later reading development (e.g., phonemic awareness, letter knowledge), we can increase the likelihood that children will experience a successful transition to first grade and beyond. Within each of the sections to follow, activities have been sequenced loosely by difficulty, with the easiest activities listed first. It is not necessary to complete all of the activities in one area before proceeding to another; rather, activities can be selected to enhance ongoing classroom routines and special events. Moreover, combining activities across areas can strengthen children's understanding of linkages between spoken and written language. Because the three areas are interrelated, teachers will want to include activities across areas in their daily and weekly planning.

ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES

Although the activities lend themselves to teaching a range of early literacy and language skills, each activity has been assigned to one primary area: print awareness, phonological awareness, or oral language. Given the range of ages and abilities in inclusive and special education settings, teachers often need to address multiple educational goals within a single activity. Within the primary area (e.g., print awareness), we provide recommendations for how children with different needs can be taught concepts and behaviors that are appropriate to their individual levels. For each level of support, we suggest teaching strategies to facilitate these individual goals.

Components

Each activity includes a main purpose statement with a list of behaviors the activity facilitates, a description of the activity materials and procedures, related behaviors and concepts, suggestions for specific child objectives or levels of participation and adult assistance for achieving these objectives, adaptations for specific disabilities or special needs, and ideas for home activities and parent involvement. Each is described in more detail next.

Main Purpose

The main purpose describes the major goals of the activity and how these goals promote the use of literacy and language.

Materials and Description of the Activity

Suggestions are provided for organizing materials, setting up the activity, and encouraging children to participate.

Adult–Child Interactive Behaviors

The Adult–Child Interactive Behaviors section describes how having adults and children participate in the same activity helps children who are functioning at different levels learn new concepts and behaviors that are appropriate to their individual needs and characteristics. The level of demand is followed by the behaviors that the adult can expect to elicit from a child with advanced skills (high demand), average skills (medium demand), or low skills (low demand). The more the adult can ask of the child reasonably (the higher the demand), the less support (scaffolding) the child typically needs, although children will need varying levels of adult assistance across different tasks and activities. As a result, levels of demand may vary from one activity to another (high to low for the purposes of this book). For each level of task demand, we suggest specific facilitation strategies (scaffolding) to support the child's learning. Facilitation strategies are organized from low to high support, in keeping with the level of demand. In general, the more competent child will require minimal guidance from the adult, whereas other children will need more intensive assistance and higher levels of scaffolding. Children learning tasks with lower demands are more likely to benefit from high–support strategies.

For each child participating in the activity, the teacher may determine the most appropriate level of demand based on the child's performance and/or the teacher's recent observations of the child. After determining appropriate levels of task demands for each child, teachers should select two or three teaching strategies to assist the child in accomplishing the task. The teacher should begin by using the least–intensive level of scaffolding (usually the first listed). If this does not help the child learn the skill, then the amount of support should gradually be increased. It is important to remember that children will respond differently to different types of support, with some children benefiting from more direct assistance and others from less direct assistance. Children who are ready to take on high–demand tasks may, at times, need high–support teaching strategies (e.g., explicit instructing). In some situations, low–support strategies (e.g., open–ended questioning) might be sufficient for children learning lowdemand tasks. During the teaching interactions, adults should evaluate and revise decisions about appropriate levels of support based on the individual child's responses to prior types of assistance.

Ideas and Adaptations

Recommendations are provided for adapting materials and activity procedures to facilitate the participation of children with visual, motor, or hearing impairments.

Home Link

For each kindergarten activity, we suggest a corresponding activity from the Early Literacy Activities for Children and Parents (Appendix B). These activities help parents reinforce learning concepts and behaviors similar to those taught in the classroom. They are arranged one to a page for ease of photocopying to send home by themselves, or to paste into a weekly class newsletter. Teachers in our experimental classes used the first pages of the Parents'Guide to Literacy Activities section as a handout to open a discussion of home–school collaboration during open–house and parent–conference sessions. These discussions, with the accompanying handout, encouraged parents and teachers to continue a joint focus on literacy as Home Link activities were sent home throughout the year.

Appendices

Completed forms featured throughout the book are provided inAppendix A. These may be photocopied from an original book for educational purposes only. Appendix B includes many helpful activities that parents can do with their children at home to reinforce the Ladders to Literacy activities. Appendix C is a helpful Glossary of terms used throughout the book.

A Note About Validity

All of the activities have been field tested by teachers working in a variety of inclusive and self–contained kindergarten classrooms with children who are at risk, children with disabilities, and children who are typically developing. The classrooms included children from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds (African American, Native American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Arabic). The activities span a range of projects and tasks from those directly involving language and literacy skills (e.g., looking at books, writing letters, learning the alphabetic principle) to those in which language and literacy skills are incorporated as fundamental components (e.g., conducting science projects, identifying story grammar).

HOW TO START

Although implementation of activities will be shaped by individual teachers'educational philosophy, classroom routines, and material resources, we have found that the most important factors for teachers in implementation are an understanding of how literacy develops, the ability to identify children who need particular and structured support to learn key concepts, and a commitment to follow and foster the development of each child in their care.

Many activities require minimal preparation and can be conducted daily (e.g., Shared Storybook Reading; Morning/Afternoon Message and News; Stop on a First Sound; Segmenting activities). Some require more extensive preparation (e.g., Sorting Objects; Rhyming Triplets); some are most effective when implemented only rarely (e.g., Following Recipes; Long Jump; Interviews), whereas others work best as ongoing and long term (e.g., Let's Find Out!).

We recommend that teachers begin with activities that can be easily integrated within current classroom routines on a frequent basis and with minimal preparation. If looking at picture books and drawing are already a part of the daily class routine, then it will be easy to implement Shared Storybook Reading or My First Journal. If circle time usually involves movement or singing, then Clap the Syllables and the Sound Isolation song can be easily used, even in the first week of kindergarten. Beginning with familiar activities allows teachers to focus on facilitating and teaching behaviors rather than implementing procedures. As teachers become more familiar with the instructional strategies, new activities may be added, preferably balancing the activities across the three literacy areas. Activities can be planned to correspond to certain themes and events during the school year (e.g., using My Dream near Martin Luther King Jr., Day; using Classroom Post Office on Valentine's Day; using Foreign Languages: Let's Say it Another Way! on Cinco de Mayo). Other activities may emerge from unplanned events. An unusually severe snowstorm can lead to a science project on snow. A child's personal experience may lead to a brainstorming session or a special Show and Tell. Regardless of thematic planning or serendipitous events, teachers will want to move quickly into the activities that support building the notion of the alphabetic principle. We suggest the followingimplementation sequence:

  • September: Begin with Print Awareness: Shared Storybook Reading with FingerPointing; Letters and Sounds; Morning/Afternoon Message and News Phonological Awareness: Listening to Songs; Clap the Syllables; Sound Isolation; Blending Stretched Sounds Oral Language: Show and Tell; Food Talk; Portraits; What Did You Hear?

  • October or November: By this time, children know their teacher and the class routines, and measurement of their starting levels of letter knowledge and phoneme segmentation is important. Consider using the measurement section (Chapter 4) to informally assess the children and determine their starting levels. These levels can change rapidly for young children, especially in the midst of rich instruction, but the measures can be re–administered every few weeks to children who appear to need more assistance with theseimportant prereading fundamentals.

  • November—December: Continue with Print Awareness I Found . . . .; Fill in the Blanks; Making Books; Cumulative Letter Knowledge

    Phonological Awareness: Rhythmic Activities; Stop on a First Sound activities; First Sound Song; Guess the Word (Blending)

    Oral Language: Power Words; Treasure Boxes; Book Review/Story Grammar
  • Second half of the year: Continue Print Awareness: Following Recipes; Writing Words; The Transition to Reading Words; Segment–to–Spell

    Phonological Awareness: Segmenting with Onset–Rime Boxes; Onset–Rime with First Letter; Segmenting into Three Phonemes; Where Is It?

    Oral Language: Feeling Objects; From This to That; Special Words; Book Buddy

    Table 3.1 shows a month–by–month implementation schedule that was used by teachers who have participated in research on the effects of Ladders to Literacy and who achieved significant gains in literacy for their students. Once activities were introduced, teachers used many of them regularly over several months.

    The Transition to Reading Words

    Main Purpose

    To understand the relation between spoken and printed words.

    When children are ready to read words, they will benefit from the integration of sound play and phonological awareness, story context, and the printed form of new words. By demonstrating how writing captures speech, you will help children understand the alphabetic principle.

    Materials

    Easy–to–read books or big books; three frequently used, decodable words printed on cards for each book

    Description of the Activity

    Choose a book that has a few words used repeatedly throughout the story (e.g., Ten Apples Up on Top (LeSieg, 1961), Great Day for Up (Dr. Seuss, 1974), Green Eggs and Ham (Dr. Seuss, 1960). You can facilitate word reading by encouraging children to recognize the relations among the sounds in spoken words ("Which sounds do you hear in top?"), the letters that make those sounds ("Which letter makes /t/?"), and the function of the word in the story ("Where are those apples?").

    Choose three short, decodable words to introduce during your story reading, and try the following sequence of activities with children who are interested in reading printed words.

  • Read the book aloud to children. Encourage children to comment on pictures or story features as you read. Pay special attention to the function of the three words you want children to learn.

  • When you come to a special word in the story, show the word on a card to your group, and ask a child to find the same word on the page ("Here's cat. Can you find cat on this page?"). Allow children to use the card as a model as they look for the word on the page.

  • Using the word cards as your list, have children blend the sounds, segment the sounds of the word, and then read the word. For each word, do the following:
    • Play Guess the Word ("/T–o–p/. Which word is that?").

    • Segment the word ("Say all of the sounds in top").

    • Decode and blend the word ("Sound it out").

    • Read the word.

  • Show children the word cards again, and encourage children to use letter cues (i.e., first sound or sounding out all letters) to read the words.

  • Now read the story again, pausing when you come to a word from the set of cards. Show children the word in print, and encourage them to read it.

  • Give children a printed list of the three words, and encourage them to write about the story. They may write a phrase, a sentence, or several sentences. Encourage children to read their writing to other children. Examples of books with decodable words include Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss (e.g., Sam, ham, not); Abiyoyo, by Pete Seeger (e.g., up, sit, grab); and Snug House, Bug House, by Susan Schade and Jon Buller (e.g., snug, bug, mix, stop).

    This activity develops the following behaviors and concepts that are related to early literacy:

    Print Awareness

    Print: book conventions, awareness of graphic symbols, letter identification, writing
    Letter—sound correspondence: single sounds and letters, words

    Phonological Awareness

    Phonological skills: rhyming, segmentation, blending

    Loved It!

    This was absolutely a very cute book! Also, a must-read for any woman who has been in a relationship (even if they are currently in one). Jennifer Love Hewitt uses her personal experiences from her MANY publicized relationships with men to shed a little light on all the intricacies of dating, all the good stuff and bad stuff, and even the 'Why didn't I think of that?' stuff in relationships. This does not mean that JLH is telling you "HOW IT IS" and that there is no other way, she is just giving her own little perspective.

    In the end this book is meant to make you feel better about your past relationships, even if they went horribly wrong, because everyone goes through them. There is even a part where she lets a man speak for himself (Jammie Kennedy - even though they were no longer together when this book came out). One of the important things to take from this book is that everyone is different, including men. Also, we are not alone. Plain and simple. Throughout her advice and perspective, JLH also provides little tips that she found successful, while stating that these might not work for everyone.

    I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun, quick, heartfelt read with no lies written in the pages.

    Jennifer Love Hewitt = Love Guru

    Self-proclaimed Love-aholic, Jennifer Love Hewitt, has penned this adorable little book for all you girls looking for love in all the wrong places. In its pages you'll find all sorts of advice from what to wear on a first to what not to eat or drink while you're on it. How to wait for him to call. How to not be overly needy. Feeling worthless. When to snuggle like "velcro" and then act all nonchalant about it. It is a tell-all book about all the "do's" and "don'ts" in relationships... or lack thereof. Her stories were insightful, witty, and humorous that not only give you a glimpse into some of her relationship woes but can also be helpful in avoiding some of those same painful and/or embarrassing scenarios.

    Although I'm one of the lucky one's who has been married for years and considers herself to be in happy, healthy relationship with her "hubs", I can definitely appreciate a book like this. I loved the cutesy graphics, the short chapters and the bullet-point areas all told in a spunky, yet honest voice. My favorite part, Jamie Kennedy's cameo - definitely makes a girl feel good about herself and puts a big smile on your face.

    This was a sweet little book that can be read in a couple of hours tops, but definitely not to be taken as light reading material as there are many lessons to be learned scattered throughout. Jennifer Love Hewitt has outdone herself in my book with her amazing love guru-ness skills. She definitely knows what she's talking about and I'm hopeful we'll hear more from her in the future.

    I really love Jennifer Love Hewitt...as an actress.
    I tried to read all of her book, but had to stop. It was poorly written and somewhat juvenile reading.
    It was as if a 12 year old watched a Sex and the City marathon and decided to write a book and
    tell it to her Uncle. It was very awkward to try and read.

    beats 'good to great'

    Straight forward, full with practical examples, and still solid! I previously read `Good to Great' and liked it. But this is better. The book has more depth, and feels more honest. Unlike many other business books it does not claim to provide the ultimate answer. This does not mean that the author shies away from having an opinion and backing it up with tons of examples, but he acknowledges that this is his interpretation and due to the nature of the research (case study research) he does not provide proven hypotheses.

    So what did I like most? Innovation is a hot topic at the moment and the general impression is that a great idea will make you a millionaire. Great companies in this study were also innovative but what quickly becomes apparent is that the real driver of success is the exploitation of an innovation. This is what separates the great from the good.

    In any case, this is a book you should read!

    Great book!

    Did you ever wonder what the average age of a company is? A mere 12.5 years. In his new book Christian Stadler explains what you need to do to stay around a little longer. He suggests that you should (1) exploit before you explore, (2) diversify into related businesses, (3) manage finances conservatively, (4) learn from the past, and (5) change in a culturally sensitive manner. The book provides capturing anecdotes from 100 year old companies to illustrate these principles. It is an entertaining read which I have no doubt you will enjoy.

    About the Author

    Paul F. Cook is the Grace B. Kerr Centennial Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma. His awards and achievements twice included the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and he was the recipient of the National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award from 1983 to 1988. Professor Cook is Associate Editor of Protein and Peptide Letters and Executive Editor of Proteins and Proteomics.

    W.W. Cleland is the M.J. Johnson Professor and Steenbock Professor of Chemical Science at the Enzyme Institute at University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the early 1960s, Cleland's landmark papers created a theoretical framework for the study of steady-state kinetics of multisubstrate enzymes and laid the foundation for all subsequent steady-state studies. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Biological Chemistry and of Biochemistry. Recognized by many as the "father of modern enzyme kinetics," Professor Cleland was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1985.

    Mainly steady-state, and entirely chemical

    The senior author (Cleland) had perhaps the greatest influence of anyone on the practice of enzyme kinetics during the 1960s and 1970s, as witnessed by the very large number of papers from that period that acknowledge his contribution to the work presented, and by the large number of papers that continue to use his terminology and way of representing reaction mechanisms. (Younger biochemists will perhaps not know that he gave the ping pong mechanism its name.) However, until now his recommendations on the subject were not conveniently gathered together in one book, and it was necessary either to go back to his well known series of papers published in 1963 or to various later review articles. This book will be welcome, therefore, to anyone in search of a modern source.

    It is a measure of how little the subject has changed that a large part of the book could have been written in 1963; indeed, it gives the impression that large parts of it were indeed written then. The major advance that is covered in detail is the development of the use of isotopes for studying enzyme mechanisms, including both the use of isotopes as labels and the use of kinetic isotope effects as mechanistic probes. Around 100 pages, or about a quarter of the book, are devoted to these topics, and for readers already thoroughly conversant with the 1963 papers these pages will constitute the most valuable part, the part they are most likely to consult in the future. As both authors have made important contributions to the use of isotopes, it is no surprise that the treatment is masterly.

    Some other parts of the book are more disappointing. The treatment of pre-steady-state kinetics is superficial: the major methods, such as stopped-flow, rapid quenching and relaxation (temperature jump etc.) are briefly described, but with little indication of what they are useful for. Similar criticisms can be, and indeed often are, made about most books on enzyme kinetics that have a primary emphasis on the steady state, but one could have hoped for more.

    In the entire book there is just one sentence (in the Preface, on page xvii) that mentions that enzymes are of interest not just to chemists but that they also have physiological roles to fulfil. Not surprisingly, therefore, although there are a few pages that mention the existence of cooperative and allosteric effects, there is no indication of what functions these might have in the living organism, and no discussion of the kinetics of multi-enzyme systems.

    not as much as hoped

    I want to improve my enzyme kinetics, so have been looking for books that are helpful. Found this one at amazon. Because the price tag is not small, I decided to rent it from library to have a feeling first. Tons of equations without explanation how they are derived. Although references are provided, it really diminishes the value of being a book: not need to look elsewhere much.
    I believe if a couple of equations can be derived in details as examples. It will make a big difference in people's understanding and will be easy for readers to follow when it goes to later and later, such as the isotope labeling.
    I never bought the book.
