Just Great

Hurley’s logic is simply the best first-order logic book I have encounter, to date. Potential buyers should definitely get the tenth edition onward, or at least the ninth edition, otherwise, the book is quite different and the formatting, for one, is considerably poorer. Not only is the arrangement of the book aesthetically appealing and easy to work with, the formatting makes for easy learning. I did have an outstanding professor, when I took my logic course, but I definitely believe this book could be used without an instructor. About a year later, after having read the book, I used it again for preparation for a metalogic course, and it worked for me just as well as when I had the first time, with an instructor.

The book covers pretty much everything I have seen covered in an undergraduate first-order logic course. The book begins with informal fallacies, works through a great deal of syllogistic and medieval logic, and moves on up to natural deduction, and so on. The book, I think, tries to adhere to a chronology of development of logic, as it was in history, but, where efficacious, Hurley has placed the most pertinent ideas together for maximized umph. The problems help the reader develop simpler skills first, before moving on to harder ones in that section. In this respect, the book is very well organized, each problem eliciting for one more new skill, once the previous one has been answered. At least half of the answers are in the back of the book, so, again, and instructor is not absolutely necessary. This book, also, does not take long to go through, which is a feat for a technical book of this kind. An adept, with some dedication, can make it through this book in a month’s time, I believe, and I feel that most students of average intelligence will be able to assimilate the vast majority of its content in four months’ time (i.e., a semester’s study).

Recommended to all, and I think any high-schooler (or anyone familiar with the abstract concept of a “variable,” perhaps middle-schoolers) upward would find tremendous value in this text. If you choose to read one book on logic, I think this would be the one I recommend.

One of the best logic texts around

I have taught logic using Hurley's "A Concise Introduction to Logic" for nearly 20 years. During that time I've compared his text with various of the other standard introductions to logic. None is better or more complete. Because it contains such a wide variety of material (from informal fallacies to categorical propositions and syllogisms, from propositional to predicate logic, from analogical reasoning to probability and statistical reasoning), it can be used in a variety of logic courses. I have used it in both critical thinking and symbolic logic courses.

One good thing is that the text doesn't vary much from one edition to the next. The changes mostly involve improvements in formatting and clarifications of specific points. I began using this text with the Eighth Edition and this latest edition is still recognizably similar to that earlier one.

Is Hurley's book perfect? No, it's not. But no text is. However, whatever flaws exist are few and far between.

For those looking for a textbook to adopt for a course, I highly recommend this book.

Beautiful Book, But Doesn't Live Up to It's Title

I thoroughly enjoyed looking at everything contained in Quentin Wilson's "The Ultimate Classic Car Book," but what it contains doesn't even come close to earning it the title, "Ultimate."

Don't get me wrong, it's a very good book and may well be worth your $18 (or whatever you can get it for "Used"). But as a person who owns a classic car and has been active in classic car circles for several years, a book doesn't earn the "Ultimate" designation when it doesn't include the bullet-nosed 1950 or '51 Studebaker, a 1913 Stutz, the Tucker, a '41 Lincoln Zephyr, a '55 Plymouth Belvedere, a '57 Chevy Nomad, or several others widely recognized as classics.

Yes, I realize that my little list there is heavily skewed to American cars, but Wilson's book is VERY heavily skewed to include more models than necessary from Rolls-Royce/Bentley, BMW, Datsun, MG, and a couple of others. Again, don't misunderstand -- those are all great cars that he has included. I simply don't think you can include so many of those, ignore other obvious classics that many of us would like to learn and see more about, and still call your book "Ultimate".

I know I'm obsessing a bit, but if I only had $20 to spend on such a book and bought it over the Internet, I would feel a little cheated upon seeing how much it leaves out. Just make sure you review it thoroughly above so that your expectations are on target.

Great Book For Any Car Enthusiast!

A great book for any classic car fan. Quentin Wilson shows his love for all classic cars by including the best from Europe, America, Japan, and even Australia! Unlike other British authors, Wilson recognizes cars from around the world, not just roadsters from Europe. Chargers and AC Cobras mingle with Aston Martins, Holden FXs, and the ever popular Ferraris and Lamborghinis. I highly recommend this book.
