This is not a "junior dictionary." This dictionary is a 100% up-to-date state of the art dictionary with a comprehensive listing of any word you might encounter as well as a key for how to use it in a sentence. With that key, students can figure out how to use the word properly in speech and composition. The dictionary itself is a learning tool because the definitions of the 60,000+ words included are limited to a 2000-word vocabulary, giving the student practice while learning new words. Additionally, the dictionary has many illustrations and diagrams which list thematic vocabulary (for example everything that is under the hood of a car or everything that is in a fully-equipped kitchen). The definitions are clear and precise: look at the definition for the word "piece." In that definition you will find a flow-chart with questions like, "Is it solid?" "Is it thin?" and so on, leading the learner to words like "drop, dash, squirt, wisp, chunk, slice, slab, segment, grain, speck...." My reading students, whose first language is English, love this book also, because the defining vocabulary is within their range. It is comprehensive enough that even teachers will find definitions of unfamiliar words (for example, I just learned that "chock" is a block of wood used to wedge under a tire). This book is the best investment a student can make. It is also an investment that every teacher should make in service to his/her students

One of Chinua Achebe's many achievements in his acclaimed first novel, Things Fall Apart, is his relentlessly unsentimental rendering of Nigerian tribal life before and after the coming of colonialism. First published in 1958, just two years before Nigeria declared independence from Great Britain, the book eschews the obvious temptation of depicting pre-colonial life as a kind of Eden. Instead, Achebe sketches a world in which violence, war, and suffering exist, but are balanced by a strong sense of tradition, ritual, and social coherence. His Ibo protagonist, Okonkwo, is a self-made man. The son of a charming ne'er-do-well, he has worked all his life to overcome his father's weakness and has arrived, finally, at great prosperity and even greater reputation among his fellows in the village of Umuofia. Okonkwo is a champion wrestler, a prosperous farmer, husband to three wives and father to several children. He is also a man who exhibits flaws well-known in Greek tragedy: Okonkwo ruled his household with a heavy hand. His wives, especially the youngest, lived in perpetual fear of his fiery temper, and so did his little children. Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness. It was deeper and more intimate than the fear of evil and capricious gods and of magic, the fear of the forest, and of the forces of nature, malevolent, red in tooth and claw. Okonkwo's fear was greater than these. It was not external but lay deep within himself. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father. And yet Achebe manages to make this cruel man deeply sympathetic. He is fond of his eldest daughter, and also of Ikemefuna, a young boy sent from another village as compensation for the wrongful death of a young woman from Umuofia. He even begins to feel pride in his eldest son, in whom he has too often seen his own father. Unfortunately, a series of tragic events tests the mettle of this strong man, and it is his fear of weakness that ultimately undoes him.

Achebe does not introduce the theme of colonialism until the last 50 pages or so. By then, Okonkwo has lost everything and been driven into exile. And yet, within the traditions of his culture, he still has hope of redemption. The arrival of missionaries in Umuofia, however, followed by representatives of the colonial government, completely disrupts Ibo culture, and in the chasm between old ways and new, Okonkwo is lost forever. Deceptively simple in its prose, Things Fall Apart packs a powerful punch as Achebe holds up the ruin of one proud man to stand for the destruction of an entire culture. --Alix Wilber

A Difficult, Worthwhile Read

The first time I read this book, I hated it. Just flat hated it. That was my junior year of high school. Flash forward a few years to college, and it's on the reading list again. "Why, oh why?" I moan. Then I read the thing. And you know what I discover? It's a masterpiece.
Chinua Achebe describes "Things Fall Apart" as a response to Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", which is, comparatively, a denser, perhaps less accessible read. The parallels are there: the ominous drumbeats Marlow describes as mingling with his heartbeat are here given a source and a context. We, as readers, are invited into the lives of the Ibo clan in Nigeria. We learn their customs, their beliefs, terms from their language. Okonkwo, the main character, is the perfect anti-hero. He is maybe Achebe's ultimate creation: flawed, angry, deeply afraid but outwardly fierce. To have given us a perfect hero would have been to sell the story of these people drastically short. Achebe's great achievement is in rendering them as humans, people we can identify with. So they don't dress like Americans, or share our religious beliefs. Who's to say which method is correct, or if there has to be a correct and incorrect way. Achebe provokes thoughtfulness and important questions. His narrative is easy to read structurally, but the story itself is painful and frustrating. It is worthy of its subject.
"Things Fall Apart" provoked some of the best classroom discussions I've ever experienced. As a reader, it has enriched my life. My thanks to Achebe for his marvelous contribution to literature. This book has a permanent place on my shelves.

The first two-thirds of "Things Fall Apart" is an affectionate description of the culture of an Ibo clan told from an insider's viewpoint, focusing on the life of Okonkwo, one of his tribe's most respected leaders. The customs and religion of the Ibo village are described with sympathy and simplicity, creating a sense of nostalgia for a way of life completely exotic to Western sensibilities, but making the reader feel the force and logic of a traditional culture seen from within. This idyllic description is clouded by the reader's awareness of the culture's fragility, a foreboding sense of pity and of looming disaster. Disaster comes, of course, in the shape of white missionaries. In the last part of the story, evangelizing Christians and English colonial administrators establish themselves in the Ibo village, and act to corrode and unravel the traditional life of the Ibo people. An escalating series of misunderstandings and conflicts between the whites and natives lead to the inevitable tragic ending. In the last paragraph of the novel, the perspective shifts suddenly to that of the English colonial adminstrator, and ends with one of the most powerful and affecting last lines of any novel I've read.
This book was thoroughly enjoyable, and I recommend it unreservedly.

Potentially deadly, so be careful.

Because it's easy to read but hard to interpret, Achebe's masterwork has become a fixture thoughout secondary and higher education. Unfortunately, its current status as a "classic text" as well as a multicultural icon threatens to make it merely another institutional artifact rather than the genuinely provocative text it is capable of being. Achebe does not gloss over the apparently savage, cruel, sexist practices of the Ibo people before the arrival of the white missionaries. Yet students are quick to overlook these tensions in the narrative, preferring to go for the "platitudes" about imperialism that they know are expected of them in the classroom devoted to assuring "diversity" is in the curriculum. The other "tension" that is often overlooked is one outside the text: respecting the autonomy and identity of an African country by staying out of its affairs vs. intervening to bring an end to mass genocide (Rwanda), starvation (Ethiopia), and enslavement of children (Sudan). Why is it a "moral imperative" for the West to interfere in Kosovo but not in Rwanda? If these tensions are not confronted, the novel is a well-crafted folk tale about a tragic hero, and also another occasion for student apathy. Achebe himself has invited strong moral judgements about his text by applying the same to Conrad's "Heart of Darkness."

Asylum brings to light the plight of thousands of women in the 19th century. A man could "get rid" of his wife by simply paying a physician $5 to sign papers sending her to an asylum for the insane where she would probably stay for the rest of her life. The conditions in many of he asylums were deplorable and the "patients" were often subjected to "treatments" that were little more than crude experiments. In this book a young woman arrives in the United States from Ireland to take a job in an asylum in West Virginia. Over the years she has many adventures that result in changed lives for herself as well as for many of the employees and inmates of the institution. It was a pleasure to read. The author has done a lot of research and presents a true picture of the plight of these women.

I hardly have time for pleasure reading but once I started this book I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. A VERY FAST read and holds your attention the entire time. Amazing details made the visuals of your mind SEE these characters as well as feel their emotions. The poetry is mind boggling that ALL THIS TALENT comes from only ONE author. I highly recommend this book and am in awe at the author's wide range of talent. This book far exceeded anything I could imagine it to be!!! Kudos Sherry Logsdon!!!

I just finished the 3rd installment in the series and LOVED it. Of the 3 books, this one is perhaps my favorite; it actually scared me! I had to read it with the lights on (but to be fair, i'm a huge chicken)! It seemed a bit darker than the rest of the series, but as and older reader I actually liked that. If you loved the prior two books, then you'll love this one. I cannot wait for the fourth installment, as there are soo many question begging to be answered after this last book.

The one negative thing about this book is that it is really short - it was not nearly enough for me to get my Mary fix. I hope the next one is longer.

Lastly, if you love the author's writing style, and have not yet read Unicorn Bait, but need more to read by S.A.- CHECK IT OUT.

I just finished the third book in the Scary Mary series and now i must read the fourth.... IF I HAD IT!!! Please let their be a fourth i need to know what happens!!!! Anyways, great read!

That was it!?! More Story Please

Don't get me wrong I really liked this book but it is majorly short. I liked the main story but I thought we would at least get to know what Mary's first dance was going to be like. I was disappointed when the book ended but it attests to how much I enjoyed what I read.
In the third installment of the Scary Mary tales, Kyle and Mary are getting closer, Rachael and Mary are having problems, something isn't quite right with Mary and Gran is determined to figure it out. Not to much with Vicky Thank goodness, but not much with Cy either. Everyone gets to know Kyle more and I can say I like him. Which is saying a lot because in the first book, he was not a likable guy at all. Mr. White is gone but he has left something for Mary and it's not good. Mary's still hearing ghost but the ghosts are causing her new challenges. The Villain is familiar to us and It takes everyone to get rid of it.

I really can't wait to read the next one but please make it longer...

About the Author

Richard L. Irwin, EdD, is a professor and the director of the Bureau of Sport & Leisure Commerce at the University of Memphis. He has taught promotion and sales at the university level for 18 years and has served as consultant with numerous sport businesses on topics relating to sales, sponsorship, licensing, and promotion. A founding member and past president of the Sport Marketing Association (SMA), Dr. Irwin has published numerous articles in sport marketing and management journals, contributed to books, and delivered presentations at regional, national, and international conferences on topics associated with sales and promotion.

William A. Sutton, EdD, currently serves as a professor and associate department head for the DeVos Sport Business Management graduate program at the University of Central Florida. In addition to his duties at UCF, Dr. Sutton is the founder and principal of Bill Sutton & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in strategic marketing and revenue enhancement. Before assuming his current positions, he served as vice president of team marketing and business operations for the National Basketball Association and has held academic appointments at Robert Morris University, Ohio State University, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

In addition to Sport Promotion and Sales Management, Dr. Sutton is a coauthor for all three editions of Sport Marketing. He has also authored more than 100 articles and has made more than 100 national and international presentations. He is a past president of NASSM and a founding member of the Sport Marketing Association (SMA) and Sport Marketing Quarterly, where he has also served as coeditor. Dr. Sutton is a featured author for Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal (SBJ) and for the basketball strategy and business magazines Basketball Gigante and FIBA Assist, published in Italy.

Larry M. McCarthy, PhD, is an associate professor of management and director of the Institute of International Business at the W. Paul Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University. He teaches in the Center for Sport Management. He held an academic appointment as the coordinator of the graduate sport management program at Georgia Southern University. A founding member of the SMA, he served as the first secretary–treasurer of the association. McCarthy's research interests focus on the activities of professional sport franchises, cross-cultural studies, and international sport management. He has published articles in national and international journals and has presented his work at national and international conferences. A lifelong member of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), he is secretary of the New York Board of the GAA and was an Olympic envoy to the Olympic Council of Ireland for the Centennial Olympic Games.
