From Library Journal
True to its title, this book does cover more time periods and regions of the world than are usually treated in a single-volume history of textiles. Considering this breadth of scope, the text is surprisingly detailed, though a unique procedure of first explaining textile techniques aids in understanding the separate articles. Twenty-four British experts offer a multidisciplinary survey of the development and usage of textiles in daily life, with an emphasis on costume. Over 300 glowing color photographs of some of the loveliest cloth ever made profess the impulse to create beauty, common across cultures and throughout the ages. The bibliography lists mostly British and foreign-language sources, and a museum collection list and glossary are also included. This is an appealing beginner's textbook that should delight specialists as well. Highly recommended.

From Booklist
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then how about over 400 illustrations? Perhaps the only fault to find with curator Harris' all-encompassing survey of global textiles is too much text, because the graphics do showcase well the history, creation, and development of cloth. On the other hand, without her words, how would readers discover that Bukhara susanis (embroidered covers) are now being used to cover TV sets? Or that natives of sub-Saharan Africa wove textile images into their myths? Aided by 24 experts and the resources of the Victoria and Albert and British museums, among others, this pricey tome is a good value for its wealth of information and ideas. Barbara Jacobs

About the Hardback Edition...
By Theseus
Harris' survey on Textiles has been a publishing hit since it first appeared in this hardback editon in 1993. And this is notable in a field full of beautiful books with beautiful pictures of beautiful textiles.

I believe the success of this book is that it actually delivers on its promise of providing encyclopedic information, with illustrations, of the entire history of textiles from ancient times. Harris and her many contributors offer both breadth and depth here. And, happily, the text serves the illustrations and the illustrations serve the text. One can cruise through the book finding inspiration and delight or one can dig in and actually study an aspect in the history of the culture of textiles.

Book details: large format chunky hardback, red cloth over boards with a sewn binding. In dustjacket. 3.75 pounnds. 320 pp. Something like 400 color illustrations.

Index, Glossary, 6 pp of bibliographic information.

An international history and illustrated survey
By Bernie
Editor Jennifer Harris at the time of publication, Deputy Director and Curator of Textiles at the Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester, England.

To describe this book would take a book. It covers different textiles from ancient societies to present day. There are twenty-four experts that describe not only techniques but the meaning of the art in each culture. My favorite section is the first chapter that shows different types of looms. I was a little disappointed not to find any drafts; however the book is concentrating on culture.

This book also has a list of further reading and an extensive glossary.

The color plates alone are worth the purchase price.

Best Patisserie book available
By C. Hill
This is by far the best and most comprehensive French patisserie book available covering a vast range of French desserts. The recipes, technique and photographs are exactly what you would expect from the grand culinary master Alain Ducasse. The book however is only in French so you need some patisserie French to use it but it's worth it just for the pictures!

God's Strange Work: William Miller and the End of the World (Library of Religious Biography), by David L. Rowe

The fascinating story of an intriguing -- and little understood -- religious figure in nineteenth-century America Calvinist Baptist preacher William Miller (1782 - 1849) was the first prominent American popularizer of using biblical prophecy to determine a specific and imminent time for Christ's return to earth. On October 22, 1844 -- a day known as the Great Disappointment - he and his followers gave away their possessions, abandoned their work, donned white robes, and ascended to rooftops and hilltops to await a Second Coming that never actually came. Or so the story goes. The truth -- revealed here -- is far less titillating but just as captivating. In fact, David Rowe argues, Miller was in many ways a mainstream, even typical figure of his time. Reflecting Rowe's meticulous research throughout, God's Strange Work does more than tell one man's remarkable story. It encapsulates the broader history of American Christianity in the time period and sets the stage for many significant later developments: the founding of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the tenets of various well-known new religious movements, and even the enduring American fascination with end-times prophecy.
Rowe rescues Miller from the fringes and places him where he rightly belongs -- in the center of American religious history.

Review
Paul S. Boyer
— author ofWhen Time Shall Be No More
"Rejecting the myths and stereotypes of popular lore, David L. Rowe in this astute biography employs psychological insight and a wealth of primary sources to present William Miller as a fully rounded human being. While vividly evoking Miller's distinctive personality, Rowe also convincingly portrays him as a representative product of a post-Revolutionary America caught up in political, social, and religious ferment. I warmly recommend this fine study."

Choice
"This is the definitive study of Miller, one of the key religious figures to emerge in 19th-century America. Essential. (Four Stars)"

A Benchmark Biography
By Michael W. Campbell
As a historian of American religion and Adventism I am pleased with this new biography of William Miller. Rowe is the first person I am aware of to meticulously go through all of Miller's extant papers--in places as diverse as Aurora University, Colgate Seminary in Rochester, and the papers discovered in the William Miller home now owned by Adventist Heritage Ministry. Rowe, who is not an adherent of any of the Adventist traditions, has done Miller and the story of Adventism a great service by demythologizing apologetics and hagiography and presenting Miller within his historical, cultural, and religious milieu. Some Seventh-day Adventists may be surprised as they read this biography to learn that Miller never became a Sabbatarian, yet I think an adherent of any Adventist tradition will find this a sympathetic yet compelling biography of the founder of a major religious movement. What is surprising is that no historian has written a biography sooner. The good news is that this biography was worth the wait!

The first scholarly biography of a seminal figure in American religious history
By John in Orlando
Incredibly, this 2008 publication is the first scholarly biography of William Miller, the Deist-turned-Baptist farmer who touched off one of the major religious movements of the Second Great Awakening. David L. Rowe's book, therefore, fills a significant gap in the literature on this period of American history, and on American religion in general. It's good, then, that it also happens to be a work of quality, one that sympathetically portrays its subject without whitewashing his flaws, and one that at the end leaves the reader with the sense of having encountered a fully-rounded human being--of having "gotten to know" Miller. Though it builds on the work of earlier scholars, including Mark Noll, Whitney Cross, and George Knight, the work impresses particularly in its extensive primary research, with much of the narrative propelled by quotations from Miller's own letters and from contemporary sources both sympathetic to and critical of Miller.

At 235 pages, the text is relatively slim. One wonders if a bit more heft in the volume would have allowed Rowe to draw out further some of his interesting insights into Miller's development. As a student of the intellectual history of this period--and as a teacher constantly looking for new approaches to share with my students--I found particularly interesting Rowe's discussion of Miller's thought as representing the transition from the objective, orderly, and systematic worldview of the Enlightenment to the personalism and affective emphases of romanticism. For instance, Rowe quotes two different descriptions by Miller, written three years apart, of his own conversion; the first emphasizes the Bible as rule and light, while the second finds in Jesus a comfort and a friend. Unfortunately, this discussion is fairly brief. Granted that the book is a biography and not an intellectual history, I would still have relished a more thorough reflection on this aspect of Miller's development.

Rowe's treatment of the Great Disappointment of Oct. 22, 1844, at first struck me as too restrained. I had expected, I suppose, that this event would take up more space in a book like this than it actually does. In reality, though, Rowe gives us a very good (if rather brief) picture of the Disappointment itself while also exploring the conflicts within Miller himself and within his movement in the aftermath. The picture of Miller that emerges here--a man whose diffidence and uncertainty helped to create much of the confusion and many of the divisions among his followers--is very compelling. Disciples like Joshua Himes, though sometimes frustrated by these qualities in Miller, remained faithful to the cause, and Rowe's portrayal of this relationship in particular is quite moving.

God's Strange Work is highly recommended for students of American religion and American history. Psychologists and philosophers of religious experience will also find it useful. It contains much that is of benefit to scholars, but it is clearly meant to be a book suitable for non-specialists as well.

Definitely worth reading more than once!
By Marcus D. Johnson
As a former Seventh-day Adventist, when I decided recently to explore the faith tradition that has had a profound impact on who I am, my first criterion was that I read a work that was not written by an SDA. Not that I despise Adventist writings, but I needed to have my heritage explained by someone who didn't feel compelled to defend the faith.

Enter David Rowe, whose book bores beneath the origin story of Millerism and reveals a man: a war veteran, father, husband, son, brother, constable, farmer, and anti-abolitionist. Thanks to Rowe, Miller becomes a human being whose search for hope in a broken world brought him to the forefront of one of the least understood movements of 19th century American evangelicalism, yet nonetheless profound in the impact it left when it famously fell apart after the Great Disappointment of 1844. I think every person who reads this book will find something in William Miller that will resonate with them as well, regardless of faith tradition. You may not agree with Miller or appreciate the Seventh-day Adventist Church, but you don't have to in order to be floored by the narrative presented in this book.

Kane An immortal, cursed to wander the Earth until he is destroyed by the violence that he himself has created. A warrior and statesman: As comfortable in the shadowy halls of courtly intrigue as he is on the bloody battlefields where those intrigue's inevitably play themselves out. Karl Edward Wagner's complex and compelling character of Kane redefines the boundaries of heroic fantasy, and stands besides Michael Moorcock's Elric, and Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and Gray Mouser as one of the most idiosyncratic and compelling characters of the fantasy genre. Gods in Darkness gathers together in one volume the complete novels of Kane.

dark fantasy at it's finest!
By Rodney Powell
Gods in darkness is stunning dark fantasy containing three novels about unforgettable anti-hero named Kane.Kane is cursed to wander the world immoral until he is destroyed by the violence that he himself has created!the first book:Bloodstone, Kane has found a ring that part of ancient alien empire that will give him incredible power which he will use for conquest not knowing that he himself is being used by the Ring's sinsister masters in the bid to enslaving the planet! This story itself has terrifying scenes of monsters, magic and battles as Kane uses his army of froglike beasts in pursue of his goal!
Second Book: Dark Crusade finds Kane joining forces with fanatical cult leader who seeks to conquer kingdom with the use of dark magic and finally in Darkness Weaves: Kane aids a depraved and hideous sorecress who wants to reclaim her empire
by using a ancient race of aquatic demons and their advance technology! This book is brilliant marriage of horror of Lovecraft with violent swashbuckling of Robert Howard. Wagner's world-building skills are awesome and lyrical prose which heigtens the atmosphere of his dark world!Wagner's descriptions of gruesome and bloody battle scenes and intrigue and betrayal will have you turning pages all through the night! You may not like Kane, who acts more of a villian than hero but you can't stop reading about him and his dark adventures as his hunger for power almost consumes him and his world!

Anti-hero
By S. J. Biggar
The three Kane books in my opinion are some of the best old style sc-fi/fantasy/horror written. It is not a Robert Jordon that sends you to sleep, it is that old fashion - torch under a blanket/can't put it down fantasy. I have read the three as separate novels and each one is awesome. Rather than some of the previous reviewers, I don't think that Bloodstone is a weaker novel - it is better seen as a faster, rollicking read not as layered or dark as the other novels.

I love the "Who won this war, that killed so many" attitude that Kane invaringly answers "I did" - "but why", "because I lived and they died.". It is so refreshing to see what is called an anti-hero, but is probably more acurately called a realist in todays terms. Not quite an opportunist, as Kane will often sacrifice self needs for cold or hot revenge or dark justice. To me this is how more of our heros should be written - all of the care but for darker reasons :-)

If you have not read these novels please do yourself a favour and do so. For Conan, Deathstalker, Corwin of Amber fans I belive you will be the richer. For Robert Jordon, Stephan Donaldson and those who want to read 1000 pages before the hero gets the fortitude to leave his town and love it - steer clear.

Classic Dark Fantasy
By Justin A. Bacon
What I'm Reading: GODS IN DARKNESS - Karl Edward Wagner

When Karl Edward Wagner began writing his Kane stories in 1970 he inherited the legacy of the barbarian hero from Robert E. Howard. Howard had almost single-handedly created sword-and-sorcery with his works, but Wagner - in creating his character of Kane - not only went back to the roots which had been planted by Conan and Kull (as so many other pale imitators had done), but also infused those roots with the rich traditions of fantasy and horror which had blossomed in the forty years since Howard had died.

Kane is one part Elric, one part Conan, but a creation all his own. His tales inherit the purity of Howard's barbarism, but also reach back into Howard's own influences to crank up the elements of Lovecraftian horror. You can feel the influences of Moorcock, Leiber, Moore, and Tolkien bubbling beneath the surface.

To this rich tradition, Wagner brought his own natural talent for the fantastical and the horrific, telling his stories with a brutal, beautiful prose.

GODS IN DARKNESS, from Night Shade Books, is a collection of all three of Karl Edward Wagner's Kane novels: BLOODSTONE, DARK CRUSADE, and DARKNESS WEAVES. It has a sister volume, THE MIDNIGHT SUN, which collects all of the Kane short stories.

BLOODSTONE

Unfortunately, the first novel in this collection is almost certainly the weakest. Perhaps the most persistent and grating problem here is Wagner's infatuation with the thesaurus, coupled with an inordinate amount of obvious pleasure taken in finding the most obscure terms possible. The intention appears to an evocation of Lovecraftian prose, but the effect which Lovecraft so expertly crafts is rendered impotent through the sheer tenacity with which Wagner pursues it.

The plot, while strong in many regards, is conveyed in an episodic fashion - with many events relegated off-stage with description or narration. The effect, in later works, is to keep the action focused on the primary cast of characters - seeing their place and their reactions within a large world. In BLOODSTONE, however, the effect is disjointed and further weakened by the fact that most of the characters (with the exception of Kane himself) have strong taints of the clich about them.

Coming to BLOODSTONE I had heard that Wagner was something of a hidden gem in the sword-and-sorcery genre: A writer whose talents compared favorably to Howard, Leiber, and Moorcock - but whose career had been cut tragically short by an early death. Reading BLOODSTONE, I was disappointed to discover an author of only mediocre skill.

DARK CRUSADE

Fortunately, the second novel in the collection is DARK CRUSADE, which should be on the reading list for any fan of sword-and-sorcery.

I don't know if BLOODSTONE was just an early work which took its time getting into print, if Wagner was simply rushed or off his rhythm while writing it, or if Wagner had a major breakthrough between '75 and '76: Whatever the case may be, everything which was only nascent mediocrity in BLOODSTONE comes together in DARK CRUSADE to craft a top notch novel.

One of the interesting things to note about Kane is that, unlike his fellow heroes-in-arms, Kane frequently finds himself on the wrong side of a conflict. Conan finds a crown when he joins a just rebellion against a tyrannical king. Kane seeks empire, and frequently allies himself with any power which becomes convenient or available. He believes that he can overcome whatever flaws or corruption exist within the power base he takes advantage of, but finds - time and time again - that the flaws and corruption are inherent to the power. As a result, Kane often finds himself in a role which would be villainous if it were not for his own nature as an anti-hero: Often he destroys his own dreams in an attempt to purify them of a tarnish which cannot be removed.

It is this dark depth of contradiction and tragic flaw - a wisdom and strength coupled with folly and weakness - which makes the character of Kane so infinitely fascinating. Like all of the great sword-and-sorcery tales, it is not the plot of pulp adventure which makes the stories of Kane a compelling read: It is the careful drawing of their larger-than-life protagonist.

DARKNESS WEAVES

The third novel in GODS IN DARKNESS is on the same playing field as the second. If anything, DARKNESS WEAVES represents an improvement over the craft and skill which went into the telling of DARK CRUSADE. Notably, a more complex cast of characters is invested with more detail, drawn in more depth, and (as a result) given greater significance.

Ultimately, none of these novels impressed me with the quality of Howard's THE HOUR OF THE DRAGON or Leiber's "Lean Times in Lankhmar". But DARK CRUSADE and DARKNESS WEAVES are both classics - and if I want to see more of the war in DARK CRUSADE and more of the twin romances in DARKNESS WEAVES, that's only a testament to the strength of what's already on the page.

Useful book to refer to
By Kevo
Having collected a vast array of memory improvement books over the course of several years I am always keen to see some new nuggets of memory gold. I wasn't wrong with this.
I was very impressed to see usage scenarios in the book. For example, are you learning to fly? If so the author covers some ways in order to memorise specific criteria. In this instance, the entire section 3.3.2 Engine Failure at Altitude. That particular section in itself shows just how you can adapt and apply the material in the book to help you with your memorising of other material. If you're into memory improvement then this book is certainly something to read and apply.

Abyssmal. DO NOT BUY THIS TITLE
By Steven M. Hudson
Do NOT buy this book. it contains no useful instruction and is almost entirely just a list of Dominic O'Brien style keywords. Poorly formatted and apparently written by a non-native English speaker with a poor command of the language, what little prose is provided is virtually unreadable. Other than a few Project Guttenburg scan of old documents I have never had a worse e-book experience. Amazon normally does a great job. Shame on them for letting such a poor work sell for $7.

Not so good
By Danish
This book only describes the NLC method of remembering things, and does not go beyond that. If you have read other books by Tony Buzan or Joshua Ferrer, this book may not be that much informative.

Wide in Scope but Narrow in Depth
By Conrad Johnson
After several years of watching this book collect dust on my shelf, I finally decided to crack it open and read it. Stumpf does a fairly decent job of encapsulating the amorphous span of human thought from the ancient Greeks to contemporary philosophy but some of his selected excerpts seem incongruous with his intended thesis, if there is one, in writing this book. Granted, it's a formidable task to summarize Western philosophy in just one book and I understand that this was meant to be used as an introductory text for a college class so unless you have a qualified professor guiding you, or if you have the time and patience to research the threads he introduces, then this book is less than satisfying for the casual reader. The author's strongest writing is about the Greek philosophers, which I assume is his forte, but then the collection and summaries degenerate into superficial abstracts. He devotes very little space to Marxism, which is a voluminous subject in its own rights, and ends up with a few sections of modern Critical Analysis which is deconstructionism (in my opinion) masquerading as philosophical thought. My final thoughts as I finished this book was that philosophy has taken a seat in the back of the academic bus and no longer provides answers but only questions that will continue to be endlessly debated by elitists who value nostalgia and peer approval more than social relevancy.
