Everything you always wanted to know about starting in Six Sigma

Books on Six Sigma often read like ancient testaments from which you must blow the dust before you crack them open. Full of half-explained jargon and abstruse terms, they tend to shed more confusion than illumination. Eventually, you throw up your hands and decide you'll just have to hire a consultant if you are ever to understand this stuff, even though most of those books are - surprise! - written by consultants. This offering by Michael C. Thomsett is a welcome exception. A champion financial writer, Thomsett ventures into heady consultant territory and emerges with an unnervingly comprehensible book about launching a straightforward Six Sigma quality control program. We advise you not to let this book's brevity fool you. It will tell you everything you always wanted to know about starting in Six Sigma, but were afraid to ask a consultant. very disappointed

Somehow there was a mistake that the book I ordered a month ago was listed twice and the seller never realized it. I never recieved the book and I had to contact them in order to find out that I would NEVER be getting my book. The one good thing that happened is that they gave me a full refund right away. The bad thing is, I am a month into my class after waiting patiently for my book, and I have already had to take 3 tests without it. Thanks

Beautiful and unique ABC book

Beautiful retro looking pictures with the letters as part of the occupation it represents. The occupations used are not typical- for some letters this is a plus, but some could be better. One of my favorite parts of the book are the "Wanted Ads" at the end of the book. I wish they had been featured on each page to help describe each job. Many are cute and clever descriptions of the work.

There are some really cool jobs out there

From A to Z we explore the many alternative occupations that are available to us as careers! We tell our children they can be anything we want to be so it is important we teach them about these jobs, all while being introduced to the alphabet! There are some really cool jobs out there, in fact! Forest ranger! Horticulturalist! Wedding singer! Ringmaster! Oceanographer! Yogi! And so many more! So depending on where your interests lie, this book may help you find the job for you!

This is a great book to read to your child to teach them, beyond doctor, lawyer, veterinarian and all the typical jobs they learn about in school, some of the great careers that are out there that they might like to study and work towards one day! We tell children to follow their dreams but sometimes they don’t know just how many options are out there for them to pursue! I love that the back glossary is a “wanted” ad. I appreciate all the different jobs that are listed, many of which are atypical and you will have to consult the glossary at the back to help explain to these growing minds what the job entails. This is a great conversation starter between you and your child and a great book where they will have fun reading, but learn more than they expected too!

A book called Fascinate fails if you aren't compelled to read it in one sitting

Which is exactly what I did!

I don't know Sally and I purchased her book right here in Amazon on referral from some old colleagues. So this review is the real deal, folks.

FASCINATE is a compelling journey into method and madness of persuasion. The concept is that whether you are pitching a new client, inviting a friend to lunch, luring a cranky toddler to sleep, or marketing a product, you are using triggers to elicit a certain response. Sally has narrowed these down to 7 (power, trust, mystique, prestige, vice, alarm and lust) and the book demonstrates and explains how dialing these triggers up and down can help you more effectively influence your relationships.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part uses lots of dare I say it ... fascinating examples ... of how fascination factors into key world events and even human development. It's a page-turner. The second part of the book reads more like your typical marketing book and won't be all that revolutionary to seasoned advertisers. But it does frame up basic motivators in a memorable way. The key take away from this section is that we are part of a fascination economy where companies and individuals that are fascinating or can make someone else feel fascinating as a result of their relationship with them will win. That's a concise bit of advice that can serve marketers, sales people, and anyone trying to persuade very well.

The third part of the book is probably my favorite. My number one pet peeve about business books is that they always promise to tell you how to be more successful but they never actually give you a formula for doing it. Sally gives her readers a clear plan for becoming more fascinating. I've already cracked the book open once this week when a concept we were planning to pitch to a client was falling just a little bit flat. I have a feeling I'll be doing that again and again.

Turns Out It's Not A Popularity Contest.

It's a Fascination contest! And with this somewhat startling insight, a book is born. And it's a book that walks its talk. It is fascinating. It hits all the seven triggers of fascination, and it earns our attention through every fascinating page. But here's the really interesting thing - this book isn't fascinating just because it tries to be. True, the author is something of a virtuoso of fascinating, being one of the most awarded advertising copywriters ever, and well-known as one of the brightest and most successful charmers in any business. This is all good, but what's going on in this book is something more fascinating. Call it depth. It's a book that has done its homework. A book that is chock full of new stories, insights and intelligence for people whose lives and livelihoods depend on being a bit more fascinating. A book with ample handles for people who want to grab hold of the concepts and put them to work. I enjoyed finding out my F-score, for example, and learning my fascination strengths and weaknesses. At it's core, this book addresses a critically important issue. Since, in this world, the good and the right don't necessarily win, but the fascinating have an unfair advantage -- it's important for everyone who's trying to get anything good done to become more fascinating, to put these concepts and these tools to work.

Fascination - Thin Book With New Nomenclature For Marketing 101

Fascination's only surprise is it is not fascinating. The book is thin, not just in pages, but in saying anything new in marketing. Lust is just another word for sizzle. Mystique is just another word for teaser ads. Alarm is just another word for the power of being left out. Prestige is just another word for branding. Power is just another word for expertise. Vise is just another word for using the power of bathing suits selling Sports Illustrated. Trust is just another word for being reliable.

The author makes a valiant, but overly thin research of human behavior and anatomy to explain why these seven "fascinations" work in marketing.

But we all know they work. And we all know that some work better than others for selling different things. And while the author tries to tell us why they work, most of us have been taught they work by being consumers or taking a Marketing 101 book.

Everything there is to know about the Prodigy

Great book by a friend of the band. More in depth than I thought it would be, and covers all the way up until the last album which is fantastic. I thought this may end up being one of those little fan books that people have for bands, but it is a full book with descriptions that really put you in the mindset of Liam and how his experiences shaped the band and music. The book itself is a great size, the cover has a great look to it, and the font is the perfect size for reading. I have to say as a lifelong Prodigy fan, this gave me everything I wanted to know and more. Cheers!

All too True

This is the perfect book for a hardcore Prodigy fan. You learn a bit about the whole band ,their beginnings , and their hardships. All in all I'm a huge Keith Flint fan(I dressed up as him for a local talent show and performed a selection from the band) and this was surely the most informative Prodigy book I have read. I just want another album to come out. If you're a real Prodigy fan you'll check this book out and get hooked.

I have been a fan of Prodigy for over 15 years and this book was a great resource on the rise of the one of the Greatest Bands in the world. This book provides the who's, what, why and where for many pivital events surrounding the UK Dance scene from the late 80's up to early 21st century, a must for any fan of the scene, BIG UP.

The best book for bebop

I find some of Baker's works brilliant and others terrible. His "How To Play Bebop" series fits in the brilliant category and you really should get all three. Volume 1 is the most essential of the series, then volume 3, and lastly volume 2.

Baker is usually credited with inventing the term "bebop scale". In volume 1 of the series he describes the bebop dominant and major scales scales are and also gives you some rules for using the scales to construct bebop lines. Some of this is quite technical and may put some readers off, but if you play through the examples and use your ears you will soon catch on.

The basic idea is to add chromatic passing notes in the right places so that the your lines contain chord tones on strong beats.

He also shows techniqes for extending and connecting bop lines and provides some of his famous perpetual motion exercises to work on. There's a lot to keep you busy in this book.

It is often difficult for the beginning jazz student to know how to go from scales to improvisation. This book gives you something concrete to work with. It is a bit bewildering at first, but if you give it time to sink in you will find that you will be able to internalize the many rules and create long and sophisticated improvised bop lines. (Note this book is aimed at creating single-note lines only and does not cover chord voicings or comping).

A slightly more modern treatment of this subject can be found in volume 3 of Bergonzi's opus Inside Improvisation for All Instruments 7 Volume Set By Jerry Bergonzi (volumes 1-7), but I prefer Baker's book - it's the original and best.

Volume 2 of the "How To Play Bebop" series is a compilation of patterns to play over particular chord progressions (ii-V-I, turnarounds etc). As such this book is purely for vocabulary once you already have gained a grounding in the structure of the bebop language from volume 1.

I find the best way to approach this book is to play through a few of the patterns until you find one that appeals to your ears and then work it out in all keys around the cycle. You can also try modifying it to fit other types of chords by raising or lowering a third or fifth etc. where appropriate. It's also good to connect a few patterns and create a line that runs over the changes of an entire tune.

This book has little in the way of text and is essentially just musical examples. It is up to you to work out the best way to use it. In the context of the series it is a very useful book, but it's probably not quite so good to have in isolation. It's still well worth having though and the patterns themselves are very tasty.

Volume 3 is about how to learn and internalise tunes. This is a book that is useful in a broader sense than just the bebop genre. He covers techniques such as creating guide tone lines, playing chord tones, learning contrafacts, and more.

With the steps written out in detail for several examples, he explains the steps you should go through to learn a new tune. By learning and internalising the tune he means really knowing the melody and chord changes intimately and being able to improvise over it fluently. You can save a lot of effort by realising that many jazz tunes are contrafacts or partial contrafacts and Baker gives many examples of these. A contrafact is a tune with a different melody but the same chord changes. For example there are many, many songs based on the blues form, and nearly as many based on the changes to "I've Got Rhythm". There are many others. For example the tune "Ornithology" is based on the changes from "How High The Moon", "Groovin High" is based on the changes from "Whispering" and "Hot House" is based on the changes from "What Is This Thing Called Love?". Other changes are partial contrafacts which might contain sections with shared changes (e.g. "Take The A Train" and "The Girl From Ipanema").

This is an excellent series for anyone who wants to play jazz.

Well paced, practical, journey into GUI development in Python!

Tkinter Application Development Blueprints is a well paced introduction to concepts, theory, and practical usage of the Tkinter GUI library for Python. The author does a good job introducing the library (chapter 1), an broad overview of its API, and then goes into example usage of different features (subsequent chapters).

Note that being a 'Blueprint' based book entails that the download and active usage of the source code listings is rather necessary. It is code centric, so make sure you download all the code examples as you read through each chapter. Having the code on another monitor by your side makes referring to what the author talks about easier. Setting up a simple execution environment (in IDLE, PyCharm, etc.) is helpful too,
if a particular Blueprint seems like something you want to try out.

I particularly like the approach of this book as it gets to the detail of why using specific parts of the API in different situations matters, and the caveats/ advantages of certain ways of approaching your development. This is what makes good programming books actual 'books' that distill the author's and editors' knowledge and experience, rather than just regurgitated ideas of an API you could find on readthedocs.

Well done, highly recommended.

One of my top-five books for a serious Python applications development

I bought this book some weeks ago and after all the lines of code and explanations around the main examples of python desktop applications I must say that this book completely reduce the gap between python script development and gui desktop application development. But be careful with the first chapter because it is better to understand it clearly and take a time for practices its examples before continuing with the next pages. I know this author published some time ago another book about Tkinter but this last version is better explained and detailed with the code and explanations.
Just 4 of 5 stars because I consider that the sample code would be better presented -indentations and some more- and maybe some parts of the book like geometry managers and events management could be explained a bit more.
If you are a novice python programmer maybe first you have to take a look on this book Python GUI Programming Cookbook just as an introduction to this new one. And of course go to the tkinter official page and download the tutorial. Now I'm migrating from Java to python for small desktop application and those books help me with my common and complex tasks. I recommend them.

I wish I had found this book earlier. Lots of great examples. Excellent coding practice. Well worth the money.
The book goes beyond Tkinter to include extension like ttk. It also offers excellent programming and program optimization advice. It would be helpful if the reader had some gui programming experience--if nothing else than to know the value of this book.
