This is a very well illustrated text and atlas of operative surgical oncology. More specifically, musculoskeletal and soft tissue tumors are described. Head/Neck cancers of the parotid, upper & lower extremity masses, plexus tumors, abdominal GI neoplasms involving small intestinal, colon, pelvic lesions, and hepatic masses surgery/chemotherapy are all included.

Biliary tract, pancreatic, kidney, ureteral, omentum and mesentery lesions with how to manage approaches and resection are carefully outlined in terms of relevant radiographs, CT images, and color line drawings of anatomical regions described. This is a good reference for surgical oncologists , surgery residents, and oncology fellows. This is a very ’hands-on’ approach to the treatment of benign and malignant lesions of the genitourinary, gastrointestinal, otolaryngeal, and musculoskeletal systems.

Billroth 1 and 2, resections , vagotomies, colonic resection, with diversion, nephrectomy, splenectomy, sacral surgery sarcomatous pathologies are discussed. The minimally invasive approach is omitted for the most part with a few references on it. Overall, this is a very good book.

huge, beautiful, but not always completely useful

This, along with the Ashley Book of Knots, is one of the two "landmark" knot books. It belongs in the library of the serious knot researcher, but should not be the first or even second item in a new collection. That honor must go to Ashley.
This is not a guide for beginners. Most knots are photographed complete and tight, with precious little material on tying steps. Even expert tyers will find some of the photos dificult to follow. Organization is often poor, with knots of completely different appearance and use sometimes on the same page.
On the other hand, the sections on multi-strand knots, splicing, plaits, and decorative knotting are among the finest ever done, but again illlustrated directions are sparse.
Definitely find a copy and take a good look at this book, but make sure it is what you want before purchasing.

A Knotty Book

I bought this book at a junk store about 40 years ago when I was 10 years old. (My copy is 1958). I don't know what it was about the book that caught my eye and convinced me to part with what little cash money I might have had, but out of that purchase has come a lifetime of pleasure playing with ropes. It is not a "first book on knots" by any means ... it's often a discouraging decipher but therin lies the fun. I don't know how many "new knots" I have come up with while trying to figure out one of their illustrations. For the serious knot-head only.

A Museum of a Book

This book must be approached for what it is: a museum of knotwork. Here you will find as complete a collection of knots and fancy ropework as you will see anywhere. It is not a good place for a beginner, but once you've learned the basics elsewhere, this is an invaluable guide to knot design and craftmanship. Not user friendly by any means. Learn its ways and means, though, and you will find yourself returning again and again to its crowded picture plates.

Stating the Obvious

This book has two major flaws.

First, Helzberg's "tips" are hardly insightful. That doesn't mean they are wrong, or flawed, though reasonable people would disagree about some of them. Instead, most suffer from being obvious. This would be acceptable, in my opinion, if this were a narrative of how he and his family and team built the company, which leads me to the second flaw: its structure. The book is structured as 80 "helpful hints," each roughly 3 to 5 pages long, making it extremely disjointed.

If you're a college student studying business, or somebody embarking on an entrepreneurial venture without any experience, this book could prove useful. If you have any experience, however, you are unlikely to find it illuminating.

Like Sitting at the Feet of a Guru

If you're an entrepreneur-at any stage of the development of your business(es), you're hungry for the secrets of the successful trail blazers who have gone before you. The opportunity to learn from someone who built a strong enough business to sell to the legendary Warren Buffett would be particularly valuable. This book offers that coveted opportunity.
The author did not build his business all by himself. His father and grandfather preceded him in building the three-generation family business of 143 retail jewelry stores in 23 states. A well-led executive team made it all work beautifully. Helzberg Diamonds set the standard for customer service, earning the loyalty of thousands of customers who contributed to the success of the enterprise.
Helzberg starts his book by telling us that he's a plagiarist. He's collected ideas from many other people, used them to grow his business, and shares them in page after page of philosophy and advice. The book is organized into six sections: Managing, Decision Making, Hiring, Inspiring, Communicating, and Focusing. Each section is a collection of short chapters that deliver this effective CEO's secrets, illustrated with examples from what he and his company accomplished. Each chapter's advice is complemented by a sidebar entitled "Mining for Diamonds"-pithy statements that provide powerful guidance for any business leader. Quotes from a wide range of gurus, mentors, and leaders, offer an additional dose of thought-provoking and inspiring words.
The book is easy for busy entrepreneurs to read. The chapters are short enough to absorb during a break-coffee, bathroom, or deep breath-and tightly written enough so you can glean the concepts quickly. A list of recommended readings and an index add value to the volume. The only feature that might have improved this treasure would be a complete listing in one place of all Helzberg's "Mining for Diamonds" advice. Too bad, you'll have to go through the book chapter by chapter to mine those gems for yourself. The experience will be worthwhile...and probably repeated a few times to gain the full impact of this down-to-earth, almost homespun, recipe book for entrepreneurial success.

Anyone compiling a guide to the symphony faces two problems: impartiality versus personal enthusiasm and detailed musical analysis versus help for the newcomer. Michael Steinberg succeeds brilliantly at the task, as he has with his guide to the concerto. He has pared this vast repertory down to 118 entries (Franck and Bizet being the surprising omissions), thus keeping room for music by Schmidt, Hartmann, Harbison, Piston, and Tippett. Many of the chapters have helpful general introductions; the brief one on Mendelssohn and the longer one on Schubert are ideal. The Mahler chapter is superb, with consideration of the original version of the First Symphony and the unfinished Tenth Symphony framing a chronological discussion of the works. Steinberg includes all texts and translations of vocal movements and places even isolated works (such as G�recki's wholly atypical Third Symphony) in context. Absent is the clubby tone that infects classical music programming on public radio, and readers will not need to follow scores to understand Steinberg's points. There are some great but peripheral tidbits in the footnotes, as well as frequently trenchant quotations from various composers' letters. Best of all, Steinberg has clear concerns and enthusiasms: orchestral seating plans for the violins and the reasons that repeats in first movements are so often disregarded become refrains. The descriptions of William Schuman's Sixth Symphony and Bohuslav Martinu's Fantaisies Symphoniques may send readers rushing to listen, and the overly familiar Beethoven Eroica and Schubert "Unfinished" are once again fantastical, odd, and fresh in these pages. Beginner's perspective

The other reviewers here have given you the perspective of die-hard classical music fans. I am not really expert enough to comment on ommisions and such. But I would like to present another possible reason to purchase this book. Classical music can seem kind of inscrutable to the outsider, but this book sort of walks the reader (and listener) through each piece. I've used it to pick what piece to track down next. This book will enrich the listening experience and the listening skills of the musically minded amateur i think. It did for me.

Indispensable

A wonderful book. Michael Steinberg is probably the premier writer of program notes for symphony orchestra concerts in the English-speaking world, and his two books, The Symphony: A Listener's Guide (Oxford University Press, 1995, 678 pages), and its companion volume The Concerto: A Listener's Guide (Oxford UP, 1998, 506 pages), are probably the two best collections of program notes on the symphony and the concerto that have ever been published in English. Steinberg formerly wrote the program notes for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and currently writes them for the New York Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. He was music critic of the Boston Globe for twelve years. These two books come with glowing recommendations from such distinguished musical figures as Seiji Ozawa, Michael Tilson Thomas, Andre Previn, Herbert Blomstedt, Roger Norrington, and John Adams. Speaking as one who has attended countless symphony orchestra concerts on the East Coast, West Coast, and in Dallas for more than forty years, and has always read the program notes, I can say that I've never read any as good as these. They are readable, learned, witty, accessible, and delightful, full of important biographical and historical information, and of course musical description, evaluation, and analysis that is genuinely illuminating and enlightening, without being so technical you need to be a musicologist or seated at a piano to understand it. (Inevitably, there are some musical examples, but these are relatively few, usually fairly simple, and you don't have to understand them to grasp the meaning of the text.) I would recommend these two books strongly to any lover of classical music, anyone who attends symphony orchestra concerts.
Having said this, I can't help noting a few unfortunate omissions. The Symphony is a thick book and perhaps one is ungenerous to cavil at such a generous and generally inclusive and comprehensive volume. All the Beethoven symphonies are included, of course, as are all the symphonies of Brahms and Schumann, and all the major symphonies of Haydn (only two symphonies before No. 86), Mozart (no Mozart symphonies earlier than No. 35, "Haffner"), Tchaikovsky (three symphonies), Dvorak (four symphonies), and Bruckner (six symphonies). The two greatest twentieth-century symphonists, Mahler and Sibelius, are covered in full, including all of their published symphonies and the unfinished Mahler Tenth (but not the early Sibelius "Kullervo" symphony). The third great twentieth-century symphonist, Shostakovich, is represented by seven of his fifteen symphonies. Both Elgar symphonies are included. The most striking lapses are in the French repertoire: the Franck D minor symphony and the Saint-Saens Third ("Organ") are unaccountably omitted, and these are serious omissions. The Schubert Fifth is omitted. Copland is represented by his Second ("Short Symphony"), not his much better known and more frequently performed Third. The same can be said of Hanson, who is represented by his Fourth ("Requiem"), not his Second ("Romantic"). Among the moderns, there are some strangely arbitrary (and, one suspects, personal) choices and omissions: for example, Roy Harris' Third is omitted, although symphonies by Harbison and Hartmann are included; the Harris is surely better established in the standard repertoire than either of these composers. For Vaughan Williams, two of his most popular and accessible symphonies, the First ("Sea") and Second ("London"), are omitted in favor three later symphonies (only 4, 5, and 6 are covered).
Despite these omissions, I recommend this book and its companion volume warmly and wouldn't be without them. Now I wish Mr. Steinberg and Oxford University Press would give us a third volume, covering the large body of orchestral music that is neither symphony nor concerto (such as tone poems and symphonic suites and dances, ballets and ballet suites, incidental music to plays and pageants, major overtures and preludes, et al.).

great, but with 20 pages more it would have been perfect

I greatly enjoyed this book: Steinberg's style is lively and full of wit, but authoritative nonetheless, which is rare. As a reference book, this is an invaluable "tool" for the music lover and the scholar alike. As a fan of British and American music I found the Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Schuman chapters really praiseworthy. So, why not 5 stars? I think that, if you write such a kind of book (a "guide"), you should try to find a balance between the objective and the subjective, Steinberg tends decidedly to the subjective, which is good when he gives us so many insights about composers or conductors he met, much less so when this affects the selection criteria. For example, talking about American music, he spends pages talking about the Steinberg-dedicated Harbison Second (I bought the CD after I read the book and I found it very empty and rambling) and just a few (denigratory) lines about the Copland Third, which is a a classic , like it or not. And what about the almost total omission of the French symphonies? You won't find Franck and Bizet, as Amazon points, but also Saint-Saens is missing , and I don't think a book about symphonies can be without his Third. All in all, an indispensable issue, but with some flaws.

Charles Simmons seeds his narrative with clues from the very beginning. First, there is the epigraph from Ivan Turgenev's classic First Love, a tale of obsession, betrayal, and death, followed by the sobering first sentence, "In the summer of 1963 I fell in love and my father drowned." By the time Zina, the 20-year-old object of the young narrator's affection, appears, all the foreshadowing is tidily in place--Michael and his father have already had one brush with mortality in the water as they swim out to a sandbar and are nearly carried away by the tide. When Zina and Michael's father first meet, another warning bell goes off. "I could see right away he liked her. When he didn't like someone he smiled and said nothing. It was clear that she liked him too. Father was very handsome." Readers familiar with Turgenev's story will know what happens next; those who aren't will have to wait awhile to have their suspicions confirmed. In the meantime, Simmons paints a subtle, heartbreaking portrait of one last summer of innocence and of a paradise about to be lost.

Simmons, a former editor at the New York Times Book Review, made his name as a writer with a series of surreal comic novels, including Powdered Eggs and Wrinkles, but the present book, a coming-of-age novella, is a complete change of pace. Written in a spare masculine style, it is based loosely on Turgenev's classic First Love and is narrated by Michael Petrovich, who recalls the memorable summer of 1963 when he was 16 and when Mrs. Mertz and her beautiful daughter, Zina, rented a neighboring house on the East Coast offshore island of Bone Point. Michael's father is a handsome philanderer whose easygoing ways cause tension with his mother; meanwhile, Michael is trying to impress Zina while rejecting the cynical view of women offered by a worldly young friend. Matters come to a tragic head at the Labor Day party that ends this unsettling summer. Simmons's calm, detached telling of the tale, and the major role played by the strongly evoked ocean setting, make for an experience that seems more European than American, and it is interesting to note that this slight but telling book was first published, to enthusiastic reviews, in France.

Should be nominated for the American Book Award in Fiction

This gem of a novel is about the varieties of love and its inevitable loss, about parents and how little their children understand them, about the brittle mysteries of human connections and how gratuitously the links can be snapped, about a man trying to figure out who and what he is by looking back at the painful anti-Eden of growing up. In the 80s, I reviewed Charles Simmons's "Wrinkles" for the LA Times. Some perceptive publisher should reissue "Wrinkles" as a companion piece to "Salt Water." This book is a rich mine lode for book clubs everywhere, for people who yearn for good writing, as deceptively clear as fresh water, for all of us who are still trying to figure out who we are, how we got here, who our parents are, and who our children.

Reviewing Salt Water by Charles Simmons

I absolutely loved the experience of reading Salt Water because Bone Point, the geographical center where the characters come alive for the reader, is always felt throughout the various episodes of the novel. The author's chosen character-interaction with each other has a strong narrator with a desire to explore his internalized feelings as well as his descriptions of the characters that make up a small community on Bone Point. I hesitate to say much more other than Salt Water is a story about a young man and his awakening into manhood one summer in the early 40s, and his awakening is a page-turner. Reading Salt Water is much like being lulled by the shore on a perfect day, there is breeze, slap of waves on the sand, warm sun on your face...and all of sudden the wind picks up, the sun disappears behind angry clouds, and it starts to rain...you begin to pick up your picnic basket, soggy towels, and just as quickly as it started, the rain ends, the sun shows it's face as the clouds whiten and all you hear is the slap of waves...the gulls in the distance. I am using the very real experience that happens at the shore as a metaphor to reading Salt Water. Read it. It's worth getting wet, then drying your clothes on a rock before you head home. 5 stars

I'd recommend this to INFJ's and those seeking to understand them

As an INFJ, I often find myself in "listening mode" and/or "conflict avoidance mode" while interacting with others. The author's awareness of the tension this can elicit in an INFJ (who has strong opinions but may feel unable to express them due to 'upsetting' others) is very insightful. At the same time, however, the author does not seem especially sympathetic towards the inner struggles of an INFJ, and some of his/her remarks about the negative aspects of the INFJ personality are hard to accept.
Having said that, I'd recommend this to INFJ's and those seeking to understand them. There are especially useful comments about our penchant for solitary intellectual pursuits and passions that might seem eccentric or strange to others (which of course is why we keep them secret!)

It's nice to find literature that digs deeper than the sage/guru ...

"Another look at INFJ" is exactly what this is. It goes in more depth and explores different aspects of the INFJ than the other sources I have come across online. It's nice to find literature that digs deeper than the sage/guru stereotype.

I had a personal revelation recently, regarding confrontations and conflicts, that was mirrored perfectly in the article (I'm an INFJ). I found that quite impressive, and don't regret giving this article a chance.

I've already given it several looks

All in all a crisp but surprisingly comprehensive second look at how the INFJ ticks. Geroir gives concrete examples of how the abstract-minded INFJ can be so successful in wading through murky social waters with the ease of a "chameleon", accurately gauging the social temperature of his environment and adapting himself accordingly. It would have been nice if the piece explored in greater depth how some INFJs could be so incredibly cruel and manipulative, an embarrassing personality trait that is touched on but not elaborated here. But overall it gives the Jungian novice a solid overview, especially in regards to the INFJ's inner conflict between authenticity to self and adaptation to the emotional climate.
