Solid info inside typical Men's Health write-up

This is a decent book. It's written like a Men's Health mag, so if you don't like that "voice" then you won't enjoy this book at all. It's a bit silly but supposed to be inspiring, motivational, casual guy talk. Whatever.

Some reviews have complained about similicity of recipes. Or that recipes when followed have no flavor. Or that they turn out bad when followed exactly. Well, let me address these points.

1) Simple recipes are a positive thing for a busy man who is trying to balance a fast paced, demanding career with an active social life and a tough workout regimen. The more easy ways we can get full nutrition with high protein content the better. Less items to shop for, less time spent preparing food items, less time consuming them.

2) For somebody who is focused on body building or athletic performance, food is fuel. It isn't a social occasion. It isn't something where you sit down and enjoy all the flavors and aromas. It's like putting gas in your car. Pick the quality grade you want, pump it in, and get back on the road.

3) If you follow a recipe and it turns out bad, you probably did something wrong. If you follow recipes to the letter, you're definitely doing something wrong (unless you're baking). Recipes are guidelines. What is a "medium" tomato? Or a "large" egg? Or even "medium" heat? Food products vary widely by location, consumer-grade ovens can vary by as much as 25 degrees, stovetops vary in heat output.. you don't like cumin? Well then don't put so much in the chili. Enough said.

Now I do agree, the organization of this book is somewhat poor. It seems good at first, but after you first look at it and then start using it, you wish things were in different places. Well ya know what I did? I used a razor and cut the pages out. Used a 3-hole punch and re-organized them into a binder. Now the pages are where I want them, with dividers and markers so I can find everything quickly. It's not a holy Bible, you can suit it to fit your needs, remove the junk you don't want. I also added pages from other similar books that I like and compliment this material.

Also, this isn't a diet book per se, it's a nutrition book more than anything. If you're looking to loose weight by changing your diet, just eating the foods in the book won't be as beneficial as something tailored towards weight loss. These foods are to be paired with a strenuous exercise routine to build muscle in the serious athlete.

And finally, everybody is different. While it's tempting to have a play-by-play which tells you exactly what to eat, when to eat it, what supps to take, etc.. that doesn't mean it's going to work for you. You need to work at it, take notes, and change things one thing at a time to see what effects it has, and over time you find the right combination for you. Yea it's good to have a starting point, but unless you're built like Greg Avendon (if you're reading this you probably aren't!), then you most likely won't benefit from his nutritional profile. Take the concepts he lays out and then do the hard work to make it applicable to you.

The most interesting and insightful nutrition book to date

Just look at Gregg Avedon's (the author of the book) body and you'll know that he knows a thing or two about good nutrition. Muscle Chow is a book that constantly wows you with a wealth of information and has good tasting recipes, to boot! You can tell that nutrition is something that Gregg is really passionate about and it is not a boring scientific jargon of how nutrition should work in theory. Although he does get pretty technical--which is nice because it gives you a deeper understanding of why certain foods are so valuable--he makes sure to give a nice human element and tell you why certain foods taste good and why others don't.

Gregg could practically be a chef with how much knowledge he knows about food. For example, when selecting fish you want to get one that does not smell like fish at all--this is how you can tell that it is fresh. Also, when you are cooking chicken you want to make sure that the juices are running clear, and this is how you know it is done without having to use a meat thermometer. As a novice cook myself I am usually uninterested with cooking and not motivated to care about making food myself and would rather pay someone else to do it.

The problem with eating out in public is that you don't know exactly what is going in your food. You better believe that restaurants will cater more to taste buds than to nutrition, so an mercilessness amount of butter and other unnecessary fats and empty calories will be added to your food without your consent. I bought this book not only to save money, because body building creates an expensive food bill, but to also control exactly what I eat and pack my food with more nutrients instead of more fat and sugar.

Each chapter starts with a lesson about the type of food you are cooking, be it meat or poultry or fish, then it will give you recipes on individual pages, which is nice for quick reference. It also had modifications to recipes, such as if you are trying to be in a shredding phase or in a rest phase, where you can take more liberties and not be so strict as to ever ingredient. It even has recommendations on the recipes that are the most likely to get you ripped. The book ends by having a nutrition plan that should supplement your workout routines, although I have not got involved with this section and choose to focus on the recipes instead.

My vocabulary of food has been taken to the next level thanks to this book and every time I open it there is something new to be learned. It will inspire any cooking-illiterate person to try out being their own home chef.

You will enjoy learning how to eat, as the fitness model who authored this book describes, and the food is not bland.

The recipes are easy to make, healthy, low in fat and carbohydrates, they are all natural ingredients you can locate at the grocery store. The best part of this food recipe book is the combination (recipe) of the ingredients because many men feel they need to eat a broccoli and meat diet or other bland vegetables, so the value of this book is learning how to combine ingredients to enhance flavor without making the food unhealthy.
